66 1600 in Boxes : Update : Photos - Rolling Shell

David, the key is the vin on the roller, junkyards can hold a lot of mysteries. You need the vin from roller to make it legit. I've only 30 years into 02s but have never seen one without a block, these are not Corvette motors. Find the block in the yard and I bet the filleted vin is in the scrap pile along with the seasoned engine. Talk to the crew there, claim you need the tranny, you never know what the junkyard dog is hiding. 

What if said roller was from North of the border? Might explain a lot? 

 

Yes, but....

 

BMW was working out the booster situation from '66 through '68, emphasizing “through ‘68”.  Not only did they try different booster set-ups, they (Hoffman Motors in particular) were terrible when it came to parts availability.  And early version boosters/brake parts went NLA within a few years.  How do we even know that booster started it's life in a BMW, or in either the gutted shell or the roller?  It certainly looks a lot like the booster on my old '67.  And, given that the owner said the parts car came out of New Mexico -- and both cars are in South Carolina now -- what are the real odds that the roller shell was a Canadian 1600ti, with the airbox brackets now carefully removed and a snorkel radiator support now installed (nosepieces were frequently replaced but what about this project suggests they would carefully remove the airbox brackets on the left inner fender)?  Of course, that "New Mexico" lead might just be a red herring, to throw us off the Canada-to-South Carolina trail!  ?

 

Like I said, I cannot prove you wrong.  And I'm not going to be the guy who says to the body shop owner, "Mind if I root around your yard for the VIN you cut off the roller?"

Regarding the remote booster.

Pics that I have show that the '68 1600-2 had a remote booster up to around VIN 1563900 (Mar~Apr '68?), after that BMW used the servo with the mounted master cyl with the piggy-back reservoirs.

My records are showing that VIN 1563974 was manufactured March 11, 1968.

EDIT:  Right, yours is September 13, 1967, with a VIN on or about 1560300.

Yes I opened a can, my vin is 1563830, don't know the B day. Obviously the change to o2 masters happened concurrently to my Tortuga Taxi's birthdate. I love ti's and was hoping for a Christmas miracle for David. 

Where is he at on buying this 16?

How about getting a B day for 1563830?  Email VIN to info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com.  I’m guessing maybe February 1968?
