Intro and question

Recommended Posts

Hello, My name is Rene. I live in south Florida. I have been into BMW's for a while. Ive had a few e30's, E30M3, e36 M3 and a few Z3M coupes. I am a 2002 newby.

My father taught me how to drive in 1976 02 when I was 9. That was back in 1979. For years my parents would drive and let me handle the shifting, teamwork.

My father and I have been a team my whole life, we have worked together for over 30yrs, He is my best friend(sometimes my only one), has always been the best example of a of father, son and just general good person.

When we decided to get a car together there really was only one choice and that's a 2002.

We are planning to keep this car in the family forever. I posted a few wtb adds and received a few interesting replies. We fell in love with one of them. Its a 73 in Inka Orange. The car was built by a member of this forum but is now in someone else's hands. . It really looks beautiful both on top and bottom. Huge list of mechanicals like new gas tank, rebuilt motor, new shocks, brakes bushings and more. It is described as ready to use condition and the $15k asking price seems fair. What do you guys think? Anyone know of this car?

Welcome to the board, thanks for sharing your story. Your car looks like a great example and given the way prices have been going lately, I would say you have a good deal.

Plenty of friendly, helpful people here to help with the load.

  • Thanks 1

Welcome Rene!

Car does look nice from the pic you have posted. I think we'd need more pics and details before determining if you bought well.

But if you have confirmed the body and other metal is good, then I think you may be fine!

You may consider flying out to view the car, or perhaps at least get a PPI. Plenty of knowledgeable folks on the west coast...

Cheers,

I am trying to fly out as soon as Monday. I am not questions the price.  The seller is a good guy and I feel very confident in his descriptions.

The car was built from a very solid shell. It's a little sleeper not a stock car. I.E. springs, sways etc. The car has everything I want . I wish was on a plane heading there now.

Heres a a pic of the roommate

I just found out the car has a rebuilt title. Apparently in California if a car has not been registered in over 20 years it becomes a salvage title. This concerns me not as much as it would in other cars. For some reason I am willing to lower my standards for a 2002. Maybe because I plan to keep it forever and pass it on, title branding is not such a big deal? Many 2002's have been taken to the shell and had major panels replaced from rust and accidents yet have clean titles.

Quickly my initial 10k budget has escalated to about $18k.

I really want to buy the right car for us

I am planning to drive with my trailer in tow. Spend 2 days in the Bay Area with the kids then tow back behind my road warrior. F250

Cool!

I don't think there is much concern about a rebuilt title. Tho maybe your insurance company has an opinion about it....

For me, I wouldn't worry.

Cheers, and have a safe trip!

Ray said what I was going to say - check with your insurance co re the salvage title.  If they won't insure it, or only offer you limited coverage options, that would be a bummer.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
