installing Idler arm bushings: Feeling stupid

I knew the bushings would be a tight fit and I went for it...Probably should have lubed them at least. This is as far as they'd go before the plastic would just mushroom out. Anyone know how critical is it that they seat all the way? The metal tubes look pretty close on the inside. Any advice?

Smack em. They'll go, as long as you didn't fill the void with to much paint!

Edit: Sorry, no, that's not what I did. I put a bolt thru them and cranked a nut and washer down from the other side. That pulled them together almost flush. Again, I cleaned the paint out first.

Yes there at least two versions of the bushing and the later ones will not fit in the early subframe holes.  If you check in interior of the bushing holder and there are serrations, it is an late subframe and those bushings should work.  If not, they you have an early version.

What did the used bushings you removed look like?

What is the early/late changeover point for these? RealOEM shows the same part numbers for the bushings for 2002s built in late 1968, late 1970 and mid-1976. If that's not right, where does one get the early bushings?

Here's the parts manual's take on this.

If that's the changeover point, then my early '71 (mfg. 11/30/70) is about 6,500 cars past it. With 8379 US-spec cars built in calendar year 1970, that would put the changeover sometime in the spring of that year.

And whew! I have a set of the blue-plastic bushings in the basement, waiting to be installed. Glad that they will (probably) fit!

My car is a '68, but I bought the subframe from somebody and I'm building it up. He had no idea what year it was from, but I did buy both the early and later sets of bushings. The early ones were definitely too small. So when I crank down the bolt, it sits better, although it pops back out when I loosen it. Should be okay??
