What engines do these heads belong to???

Evening guys

I've got two 02's. The one I'm most wrapped up in (and the one I'm thinking about the engine swap for) has a head stamped 118. The other car has an engine in it with the head stamped E12. I remember the guy mentioning it was a tii engine with the injection system removed.

And are either of these engines worth keeping and fettling for extra power? I'm thinking carb, cam, exhaust etc. So long as I can find a 5 speed for it, mind!

Cheers in advance

The "118" head is from a 1600; check the block it's attached to; if the VIN begins with 156 or 157xxxx then it's a 1600 engine.  That head will physically fit on a 2002 block, but the valves are smaller, so it really shouldn't be used on a two liter block as it won't allow the engine to breathe properly.  And you'll have head gasket problems due to the combustion chamber size on the 118 head vs the 2 liter engine's bore.

The E12 head was used between early-mid 1972--when the factory switched from one to two barrel carbs--and sometime in 1975 or so when the E21 head was introduced.  E12 and E21 heads are pretty much interchangeable in that the same pistons can be used with either head.  The earlier 2002 head (121 or 121ti--contemporary with the 1600's 118 head) use a different piston.

The 118 heads were used on the 1600 & 1800 engines and have much smaller valves and ports.  The intake and exhaust manifolds from a 2 liter will bolt to the head but the ports will not match properly.  Like Mike said you should look at he VIN on the blocks and see which engine you have.  Any of the heads will fit on an engine with flat top pistons but if you have any of the domed pistons you will need the correct head to fit that piston (they will hit if you try the wrong head).  Unless you are doing a complete restoration on a 1600 and want everything perfect and original you don't want to use a 118 head.

Erk, not, as Byron says, if it's not a flattop piston.  E12 and E21 domed pistons hit the other head.  Not by much, it's true, and a bit of

grinding can make them physically fit, but a domed (9.0 and above) piston should match its head.  Because Der Fatherland.

Oops, sorry for the mistake; I stand corrected.  I wasn't thinking about domed pistons, just the stock 8.0 CR pistons used on US cars.

BTW, if anyone needs a 118 head for their 1600, I have one in nice shape.
