Help determining value - 1973 Inka Project

It's be a while since I was active here, it's good to be back. 

 

A few months ago I was selling my '99 R1100S on CL and wasn't finding much of a market for it locally when out of the blue, a gentlman in NM contacted me about possibly trading the bike for his 1973 Roundie project that needed some TLC to get running. We talked details, swapped photos and videos and decided to do the deal. He loaded it up, drove several hours and all checked out as promised so titles were swapped. 

 

As of yesterday, with the help of some new vacuum lines, oil and a battery, the car runs and drives, although it needs plenty of things gone through still. So, I sit here at a crossroad contemplating whether it's a project I want to tackle financially or sell on to a better home. The biggest question in the argument is, 'how much is she worth in her current condition?' and I'm seeking the FAQs vast experiences for the answer.

 

I know how much you lads say a resto would cost, but if I kept it, it'd be far from a resto of yalls nature. I'm cheap and we're in the process of saving for a house, so lots of the work would be time spent in lieu a big budget (I have plenty of time and friends who work in with mechanics or paint/body so I know I could get it done, but it'd still be stretched over a year or two in an effort to satisfy a working budget).

 

Thus this isn't a discussion of which route to take, but simply what price could I ask for it? I know lots of you are longtimers and I'm well aware of the prices you're used to paying for something like this, so I am looking for folks with recent purchasing/selling advice, not 'it's a $500 parts car' statistics from 2005. I bought a 1602 years ago and familiarized myself with the market then.

 

Based on threads/for sale ads/etc on the FAQ amongst other sources, I'll go out on a limb and say I think it to be worth between $2,500 and $4k.

 

The important details:

 

1973 2002, 4 speed, non-sunroof, originally Inka, non-numbers matching engine, clean title, mostly stock besides Weber 32/36 water choked, rust mostly limited to rear-right rocker, quarter panel, passenger floor pan (original NM car and confirmed still there at least from 2004 till now) has two or three spots of obviously thick bondo, has had the nose clip replaced but still has original inner fenders. Mostly complete (boxes full of trim/parts that aren't pictured on car), runs and drives good for sitting for two years, but of course needs brake work, fluids flushed, things lubed, rubber replaced.

 

I appreciate any and all insights on value.

It doesn't look terrible, but it IS a serious restoration project. If that's not what you had in mind, put it up for sale. Your value estimates don't sound out of line, but the only way to prove that is to put it out there - on line - and see what kind of offers you get. No harm in being optimistic, as you can always come down in price. To go up, on the other hand, is generally frowned upon. Given that the car was originally Inka, which is an iconic 2002 color, there should be some interest from serious enthusiasts.

Doesn't look half bad. Could be a cool little rat rod project if thats something you would be interested in. It would look great with fresh trim, and a little bit lowered. 

 

But keep in mind, if there's a place for you to keep it, out of the weather. It would make a great fun car to work on when the time is right.

If $2000-$2500 is the true ballpark, ask $2800 and see what shakes out from there. An honest offer of 2 grand at least opens the negotiation door. Who knows, you may get $2500, or close to it from the right enthusiast.

Thanks for the insight you folks are always good for.

 

It is currently stored in a Harbor Frieght garage/tent, so no worries there, I'd rather not have a low-rust car become a nightmare over this pending winter.

 

I've had it up on CL for anywhere between $2,600 and $3,500 and I've got a decent amount of interest, but no hand shakes, for which I have to say the Inka factor is a huge buying point to everyone whom has stopped by. I guess bias owner feelings aside, I'd agree with the idea that if I posted it for $2,250 it'd sell, while I still feel $2,600 would be a good deal for someone local who could forgo shipping it long distance. Sadly at that price it's worth more to me to keep for a while and hoping I find some time and funds to tinker.

 

We'll wait and see if I can talk the ole lady into letting me spend just a little bit on money this fall and go from there.
