Hi,

over the years i have seen a lot of blown up engines. so the one i just pulled

from a customers car is no different. the BBQ spare rib is sticking out of a fist

size hole just at the back end of the starter. it actually smashed the starter. so

i find a motor to replace it in my warehouse. i run it and it is good to install.

pull out the old lump and while switching all the parts over to the replacement

i have to pull the head cover. ?????? what is that? the cam shaft is not regular

to what i have seen for thirty years. it has one red stprie and one pearl stripe just

behind the front journal  a triangle stamp mark just past clyinder number two.

then just ahead of #4 the bmw is stamped in very small letters and followed

by 9487. on the front of the cam 080 is hammered into the circle that the cam

centers on. see the pictures. anybody have ideas.

thanks

stone

Sorry to piggyback here but I was wondering if there is anyone out there that has seen the saddle feature shown below on their cam or another's. There is the number stamp 8598 or 8588 yet no markings elsewhere like the standard "2" found on the cam gear flange nor any BMW part number as shown in the last photo on a stock cam from my August '71 built '02. If this is simply a function of the casting and a method of handling of some sorts please let me know. The head is a 121 also from a '71 build '02 but not mine. Found the motor with a 38/38 Weber, 2 row timing chain, and Pertronix Ignitor in a Tii dizzy. Head looks pretty clean, block painted as if it had been rebuilt relatively recently.
