Best Driveshaft For Conversion

I dropped my car off to have the 5 speed conversion done and after speaking with the mechanic it would seem more hassle to have a driveshaft made and I would just buy one...

I know Ireland has one... any other companies making them...  If so preference????

In the archives, which are accessed by the 'search' box in the upper right, are a lot of opinions on this.

Mine have traditionally been made by Driveline Service of Portland

Ok.... So what am I doing wrong on the search function... I clicked on the little gear, typed driveshaft conversion or 5speed conversion... Most talk about sending your driveshaft in to be cut, shortened and created.  Mechanic used to know of someone about 45 min away that did it.  In the essence of time and reliability, I decided would buy one.  I did use the search feature... The question is not making one, but buying premade ones.

I saw Ireland has one, just wanted to know of other that may be out there

Again, I did use the search function and eventually ended up at http://www.bimmers.com/02/upgrades/transmission.html

there is lots of talk about having them made because.....

the best one is one THAT IS THE RIGHT LENGTH!  not all cars are the same and there is no sliding joint to accommodate errors in measurement and there is precious little play in the diff mount.  install the tranny, measure the length you need and get one the right length, whether it is custom or premade.

For the search, just type what you want in the box, then click on "This topic" and select Google.

For the drive shaft, I did what Toby said and went through  Driveline Service of Portland. They farm out the BMW drive shafts now but take care of the whole deal. I got a new, fresh built drive shaft the length I ordered. I sent my drive shaft in for a core but it was not used on mine.

Thanks... As I am not installing it, I will talk to my guy after the trans goes in.  He knows his stuff and suggested rather than trying to find a local place to get it premade.  I will talk to him about the guy in pennsauken as I can drive there.

Thanks.

If you buy the ireland one you still have to send yours in as a core They may make have cores to sell you in stock. Not to stir the pot but you should not have to measure it. if your old drive shaft was a standard 2002 drive shaft and it fit fine and the new tranny is a known length ( which it its) then ireland drive shaft will fit perfect....its just math.

Great theory, poor practice.

I have done three conversions, all three needed non-standard length drive shafts.
