1973 2002 in Arizona $1500

Hard to find good running 2002's for this price. Check for rust in the usual places + the rain rails since it has a rack attached. Flagstaff gets snow so crawl around a bit and look for low rust. Everything on these cars nibbles $50's and $100's from the wallet so TLC shouldn't be taken lightly. If you can drive it home safely and don't care about the "cosmetics" its probably a good price.

Beware: These cars have a way of turning your garage into a parts collection once you realize how expensive parts can be. Before you know it your hoarding parts because you found a good price on something that you might need.

Good luck and have fun looking.

Take a good look at one of the pre-purchase checklists for 2002 online (here on the FAQ and elsewhere.)

Here is one of the better ones that I have found. Suggest printing it out and bring it with you:

If you can swing it, a PPI (pre purchase inspection) by a mechanic who knows BMWs is a good idea. Most of the better independent BMW shops around the country will do PPIs for a reasonable fee (I haven't priced it lately but I'd say around $150). Well worth the investment.

If you are thinking about buying a car over the internet, sight unseen, a PPI by a local mechanic (in the area the car is, obviously), that you pay for, is your best and only insurance.

Finally, if you are looking for your first 2002, definitely get a book. The Mike Macartney book "02 Restoration" has been well thought of. It goes into the rust areas (including replacement of the sheet metal) in tons of detail. You can find it at many booksellers online... even at $20 it is a drop in the bucket compared to a $1500 car (heck, if you buy a perfect $12,000 car you might not need it, but on a $1,500 car with needs, you're much more likely to.)

Next fun car, and occupation: Looking for the right BMW 2002 or e28

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
