Pumping Gas is such a Chore

My second time pumping gas (just started driving) and i cant seem to master it. Now don't laugh please, I've pumped gas for plenty of other cars, but no matter how deep or shallow i point the nossel and how little or a lot i press the trigger, i get some spillage while pumping.

What's the secret or am i just...

You have to get the nozzle as far as you can down the filler neck and then keep the "throttle" as low as possible. It is possible to fill in 02 tank without backflush and spillage. I usually lean into the filler nozzle to push it as far into the neck as possible. Some fillers just won't dispense at a low speed and you are SOL with those. Frustrating to say the least. If it really bothers you, you can install a straight filler in the trunk. That presents its own problems if you spill fuel there...

Well I just started driving too but I pumped diesel in the trucks, for my dad. What I normal do is let the pump run out untill it stops and then run it up to a round dollar. THen point the noosel downward to remove the rest of the gas out of the nossel then pull it out and point the nossel upward quickly. I had never had it drip on me when I did it like this

Good luck

Gotta go slow. Sometimes it helps to turn the handle to 4 or 7 o'clock. But if you just take it slow, you won't spill. Much. Now, those fully plastic elephant trunk pumps just suck. Go to another station without those (unless you live in CA).

I dont even have to pump gas here.

yeah, one of the pros of living in oregon, except you have to make sure the bastards dont get gas all over the side of your car. i know it makes you look like an asshole, but if im in anything but my yota i bring a towel.

like towlie says..."dont forget to bring a towel!!!"

After checking to be sure the material is resistant to gasoline, I had a specialty shop install a piece of "clear bra" material under the filler opening - it extends fore and aft of the opening a couple of inches and all the way down the side of the panel. Unless you look for it you can't see it, and that way the occasional dribble won't do any damage to the paint if you can't get it cleaned up right away.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive, well-preserved body. You should skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body totally used up, screaming "WOO HOO! What a ride!!"

You could also mod the tank and make the external filler door a decoration and add a cap on a hose in the trunk and fill straight in the tank from the trunk.

In oregon we dont have those boot things. I'm from Washington so when the attendant walks away here in Oregon I slow the nozzle down and round it up to a dollar when it clicks, then take the nozzle out before he can even do anything. None of em have bitched at me yet for doing their job :P

Not one of my 2 cars had ever had spillage problems. Both are euro cars, did the US cars get a different filler neck?

if your station nozzle has the accordian hose attached (vapor recovery)

put a finger between the hose and your cars filler mouth

so air can vent!

The problem is some of the cars have blocked

vapor systems due to hacks disconnecting and plugging

the vent line from the tank to the front of the car - the original

gas vapor system is plugged so your unable to fill up with a

sealing accordian hose tight up against the cars filler mouth.

Keep the hose pulled up away from the filler mouth

and you'll find your filling time cut dramaticly

and yes - EURO / SA models have a simple vent hose

out the back of the car - not plugging air escaping from the tank

-like botched up USA fuel vapor recycling systems

This is off a Triumph, the hose is from a marine supply.

I'm in CA with the accordian pumps, and I can pump full speed, no spills. It take alot of practice, but the key is not to think about where you position the handle, instead think about where you are pointing the stream of fuel. Point it in a way that it spirals down the filler instead of hitting the back of the filler tube and bouncing back. Fill full speed until you see it bubble back up, let it settle, and then fill until it bubbles again. I can put a consistent 11 - 11.3 gallons in when I let it run all the way down to the "R" line.

BTW, if you thought the 02 was bad, try filling a VW Bus.
