The subframe motor mount finally clears the oil pan, after several days of notching, grinding, welding, fitting, grinding notching.....my subframe mods are only tacked in place, as I'm still entertaining the idea of moving the motor back 2 inches.

Now on to the tunnel mods. I'm leaning towards doing the e30 tunnel, as it simply looks the cleanest.

I started stripping the interior and whaddya know...found some rust in the doors and rear quarters I had not seen before. I also found some leaves that have got to be pretty old!

The driver's door seems to have additional bracing that the passenger door does not have, and is also a different color underneath the white.

Just get the motor in and drive the dang thing, right?

Nice work!

I'm glad someone else posted up the problem with the VAC pan interfering with the subframe, because VAC just blew me off when I said I had a problem fitting. But the pan is too beautiful, so I made new motor mounts also.

Wow, Ian! That's quite a bit of work you have done there. VAC didn't exactly give me the runaround (after all, they did offer to take the pan back), but I just wish they would have advertised from the git-go that the pan does not fit the subframe. It didn't even fit the motor at first! They told me they had never had any complaints and that I was the first they could remember...

I figured the only alternative is the inferior M10 pan, or a much more expensive dry sump system. In hindsight, I would go with the dry sump system, but that is $2500 more, at least.

I was lucky enough to find a gentleman in NY who is shipping me a tunnel from an e30 to clear the M3 gearbox, so with all the surgery going on, the motor is definitely moving back!

maybe Lee has an extra of his M2 oil pans. fits perfectly and works great. no subframe modifications needed. very happy with mine. baffling has kept the oil pressure exactly where it is supposed to be no matter where on the race track.

Thanks for the tip, but the subframe is already modified. Unfortunately, the gentleman with the tunnel has had some other things take priority over shipping sheet metal cross country, so I'm kinda back to square one on the tunnel mods. Oh well...

I did try the dry ice trick on the asphalt sound insulation, works pretty well. You do need to be rather ginger with the mallet, even a rubber one, because the metal will deform pretty easily. None of that UHSS stuff here!
