Gearbox numbers--need a quick answer (sorry kittens!)

E21 Five speeds: what's the gearbox number for the three piece case (80-81) and then for the two piece case (82-83)? I always confuse the numbers and don't want to get it wrong in print!

Need it to finish a column and the deadline's looming!

ya, mon. here is the euro early:

and the later one, which corresponds with the usa one, -9/82

and because in europe, the last production run of the 320/m10 was before 9/82, the next run would be the e30. however, some of the other euro e21 also had the 240/5, some 315/16. here is the 5 spds for euro e30:

note the 240 on these.

checking the housings, the 240 for e21 is different from e30.

these housings fit only usa 320i, 9/82-, and 315/16. also early euro 316 euro

thing is, the castings have the number for the EARLIER case that they fit.

So the 5- speed castings from the 80- 82 (245) are all the same

as the 4- speed castings from 77- 79, (242) except for the

extension housing, so they all say 240, in the casting marks,

I thinkus.

The 2- piece 5- speed comes from 82- 85 e21 and e30 cars.

It has different castings, and only the 82 e21 has a speedo.

The others have boxers.

Don't use my numbers, Mike, because I'm not looking at parts,

and my memory is not worth the paper it's printed on.

RealOEM seems to agree, tho...
