Newbie here again looking for some help. Posted about 2 weeks ago with some engine problems. Thanks again for the help and it looks like the engine will be getting some new parts!

Problem is that when I got the car the motor has already been swapped. Last owner thinks it was out of a "75" 2002.

I am looking for help or link to try and figure out what gaskets, pistons, valves, etc. I will have to order.

Check out the picture here:https://www.facebook.com/media/set/fbx/?set=a.148613938507599.23108.100000769822634#!/photo.php?fbid=197630846939241&set=a.148613938507599.23108.100000769822634&type=1&theater

Thank you, John[/img]

that is the serial number of the car the engine came out of. You can look it up by using the serial number. BUT, the engine may have been modified, so you will need to order parts once it is disassembled and measured for bore size, etc.

FActory replacement engine. I don't know how to read the numbers any more than that.

Hopefully someone with dealer parts counter connections can help. The picture is a bit hard to read so it'd be best if you read the numbers/letters and type it up. Let's see if uncle CD can help out.....

have a 7 digit number that would match your car's VIN--or at least a 7 digit 1600 or 2002 VIN if it had been replaced.

Probably a factory rebuilt engine...but...just a guess, the "21" that's visible in your picture might relate to it being from an E21 (320). Check the cylinder head to see what type it is; that can be a clue as to where the engine came from. The latest style head would be an E21; earlier ones were E12, and 121ti.

  • 2 weeks later...

No pictures yet b/c tear down ended when it was getting dark. Measuring the heads it looks like 89mm.

Inside the pistons there are a few numbers: 089054 3+ 1275 There is also a $ looking symbol?

Any info would be helpful.

I will try and get a good pic in the next day or two.

Thank you, John
