No Heat in Car

Recommended Posts

My blower motor is bad but i should be able to get heat from the engine nonetheless. I've noticed that i cannot slide my heating lever all the way to the right to warm. It only goes as far as halfway. Do I need to remove the entire dash to get a look at the mechanism? Thanks. 1974 2002.

...no - you just need to reach your hand into the passenger

side of the firewall and hand turn the hot water valve further

open

then the faster you drive - the more air flow you'll get

Before looking under the dash check the heater valve under the hood. When the lever is halfway where's the valve?

Would I be turning it by hand. The heater lever seems to be pulling a cable which seems not to have enough slack to pull inwood to allow the lever to go completely right. I've attached a photo of what i think is the heater valve. If it is, how do i turn it?

Yes you will be. pop the hood, and walk to passenger side and look just below the windshield in the cowl area, where the wiper motor is and you will see the valve and the other end of the Heater bowden cable, (hard wire).

grab this with one hand and move front to back or back to front. check in car for position. adjust if necessary, caution the mounting bracket will be fragile so handle with care.

the heater valve is on the drivers side, outside the car, under the wiper arm...it'll have a heater hose connected to the end facing the motor...

the hardware that controls the lever is under the dash and as you're aware are operated by cables pulling and pushing control arms that operate the various flaps for heat, defrost, hot and cold air...

unhook the cable, outside, under the hood and try rotating the heater valve lever...if it works, you'll need to climb under the dash and find out why the cable is binding

sometimes it's just rust & old age...the cables run thru a coiled sleeve and can easily get stuck or rusty and not operate fully...some pb blaster, etc might help if it's just a stuck cable

I was just thinking from the last post the my wiper motor is on the driver side not the passenger side. was just gonna run back out when i saw your post. thanks!!!

Look at car on drivers and passenger side and there is no valve or cable. The only things coming out of or attached to firewall are wiper motor, heater fan and one hose picture above on passenger side and one hose on drivers side!! Looking at the cable under the dash it goes into the heating box.

the picture you attached in your 2nd post is the heater valve we're describing to you...if there is no cable attached, that could be the problem...there should, however, still be the remains of where the lever was that opens and closes the heater valve...and where the cable from the dash control attached

Here is what you cannot see from the passenger side. The cable moves the lever in and out to control the heater valve. I suggest you use a small mirror and light from the passenger side to view this arm.

Here is one of the two control lever assemblies.

thanks. no one else noted that my 2nd pic was the valve so i assumed it wasn't and kept looking. thanks a lot. the cable is indeed attached and the lever does move the cable. I've attached pictures of the lever. Not the halfway point is as far as it goes. Notice with the lever in this position the cable goes to 8 o'clock with the hose being at 10 o'clock. Is this as far as it's supposed to go, or is 10 o'clock the max with the lever inside the car slid all the way right to warm position?
