Ha, I just had this issue today with my M3. I always use the Mahle filter because it has nice aluminum end caps that sit well in the filter housing. I got a Mann in the last box of parts I ordered and it looked like an old coffee filter! I'm sure it works just the same, but on the e36 m3 the Mahle looks much more durable.

I think for the hard case screw on type they're most likely identical. It's really up to you which brand name you want to see on the outside of the filter when you look in your engine bay.

LOL....for 2002's they all have to be hard case! would be very messy otherwise....

There are two, a filter insert (see pictures) and the hardcase screw-on.

The correct MANN Filter insert would be the H 601 like mine has.

the later MANN hardcase filter has the number W712/6

Oh and there's no difference between Mahle and MANN - both are the best you can get for your car.

The company I work for used to be owned by Mann+Hummel. Their quarterly employee newsletter frequently showcased how they try to quash the sale of imitation filters. The cheap copies have always been tough to identify.

In addition to filters, Mann+Hummel also makes intake manifolds, (protective) engine covers, valve covers, washer and coolant reservoirs, etc.
