New member/owner of 74 2002 Tii Malaga

Hi everyone,

My name is Beck and I am the proud new owner of a American-spec '74 2002 Tii Malaga. My love for retro euro cars was sparked by my first car I owned in high school, an 87 Alfa Romeo Milano.

I currently still own an '89 E30 cabrio that I use as my daily driver, but I've always wanted to get into the 60's or 70's euro cars.

I am a freelance photojournalist in San Francisco, CA, and I have a lot of free time to work on the new car.

My plan right now is to keep/return it to entirely stock. Even though it has the big bumpers (which I think are ugly) I don't think I will shrink them or swap them out for pre-74's. I may be temped to add round fog lamps to the front grill. Were those ever a stock option?

(couldn't get the photo attachments to work so here are links to a bunch of photos on my server)

Left rear brake light is not working. New bulb didn't fix it so must be a wiring issue:

Odometer only says 4936 miles. Engine runs incredible smooth so I'd like to think that it is true.

4936 - In my dreams

104936 - possible

204936 - also possible

Only rust (I have found) is a small spot on the front bumper. But the windshield could really use replacing. Two small cracks and the gasket is cracked everywhere:

I have already made a long list of projects for the car. First of which to flush all the fluids, change all the filters and do a brake job.

Turn signals don't work so I have to figure that out. Also none of the doors lock. Gonna have to find new cylinders I guess.

Engine starts up and runs very solid. I have no intention to hack it or soup it up. Want to keep it original for however long the car gods will let me:

A poorly done respray must have been done in the past. You can see the difference between original Malaga in the engine bay (top) and the faded crap paint (bottom):

Factory installed electric sunroof. How rare are these? Doesn't work right now so not sure how hard finding a rebuilt motor will be.

Interior is in pretty great shape but the 320i (I think) seats desperately need to be restuffed:

Do any of you guys know if those orange fog lights were a stock option?

I see many '02's with square fogs below the front bumper but none with orange covers.

Also note the E30 rims. (coincidentally the same exact rims on my E30).

Thanks for looking!

Welcome Beck. fixed your pics so everyone doesn't have to keep clicking on them. Looks like at least 100K on the car. Nice car, should be fun fixing it up.

Nice snorkel-less nose (such that the nose is probably original to the car)!

Careful, that windshield may decide to remove itself with little prompting, judging by the state of the gasket!

Nice find.

Cheers,

Ray

Nice looking Tii. Those fog lights are inexpensive and added by a previous owner. I had an electric factory sunroof on a `76 but my `74 was manual. Those blue plates indicate your Tii was most likely sold in southern CA in Nov/Dec of `74. My `74 was 501LXD and I bought it in Dec `74 in Hermosa Beach, so those plates were local to that area.

Did you buy it from a guy in Auburn? I'm 99% sure its the one I looked at last month. Almost no rust with a respray paint job almost purple.

I looked at this car about 1 1/2 years ago, and passed on it. But this was before he fixed a major leak on the injection pump, didn't even run at that time. Hope you got a good deal. Enjoy !!!

Yea last month when I went to look at it he was having a hard time getting it to run. If it was Malaga I probably would have made a lower offer then his asking price. It defiantly needs paint and windshield gaskets and a few small things. The interior is clean!

And a bunch of other old junk
