Woah...that number 2 spark plug sure is shiny. And fat.

I'm sorry to learn of your loss, and will gladly offer my assistance with your several projects. It would be interesting to learn whether and how a motor can be disassembled, reassembled and installed without the use of a 10-lb sledge, a breaker bar, and 4 clowns in sneakers.

that is what happens when a valve hits a piston, gets bent, hits the piston a bunch more, breaks off, rattles around destroying the plug, then knocks a hole in the piston top to let all the little metal bits drop into the crankcase.

clowns with sneakers?

Back to the S14…..finally pulled the oil pan off. Looks like a baffle was installed. Anyone recognize the style? Not sure how effective it is. Still hoping for a Massive S14 oil pan so I won’t have to put this back on.

Oil pump “looks” ok, but will be replaced ($$$ ouch). Has M10 pickup on it.

Don’t see anything visually amiss with the bottom end components.

Each conrod has a different “V” number on it. 235, 236, 262,…. Is there any significance to this?

spent today cleaning and painting stuff. any loose part that bolts on the engine got removed and refreshed. here is pic of the turbo exhaust with a fresh coat of high temp paint.

DSCN4223.jpg

also got a tip from someone on an s14 board regarding the oil pump. apparently instead of paying $400 for a new pump, you can replace the two impeller/rotors for under $100. will be looking into that! anyone here done it?

Took the conrod bearing shells out today. They have 10/87 stamped on them, so I bet they are original! Crank looks good.

after this project was done, had some fun pulling the 3.91 LSD out of the ex-M2 so that Grice could borrow to get his car to Chapterfest.

it is called black, but comes out dark gray. hold on to your wallet...it is rustoleum high temp bbq paint! :-) available at any hardware store. i have used it on multiple header and exhaust systems. works great, lasts a long time.

Speaking of LSD's, here's a photo of the diff cleaned up and mounted, ready for install into my 76 tomorrow. A huge thank you to Marshall for loaning me a diff and a BMW bearing installation tool. The diff cleaned up nicely. The bearing tool makes a rather annoying job amazingly easy.

  • 2 weeks later...

More work on the engine this weekend. Got a nice box’o parts from blunt to help me along!

Rear main seal replaced and cover cleaned up

DSCN4242.jpg

Water pump installed along with the pulley. Lot’s of fun hacking the threaded end of water pump off..

DSCN4243.jpg

replace the front crank seal too, then pulled oil pump out to inspect. Actually looks pretty shiny inside.

Then the invasion of the ivy rd red car gang occurred. Grice, Dudley and Jay appeared and we had all kinds of fun playing with the dcoe’s on Grice’s 2.3 stroker. Now seems to idle nicely at 950rpm and the grins on Grice and Jay’s faces as they returned from the test drive were….priceless! (sorry, no pics of that one….)

Well now, as I pull mine apart your is going together nicely, I cant wait for that stage!!! Im glad to hear that Grice's car is up and running better. Did he get that thing lowered in the front?

yes..there was a 2in spacer under the camber plate that is now on top. grices car is much lower in front now, but still needs springs cut just a little.

i continue to be a big fan of the expensive, but completely worth it, threaded sleave and race spring combos like Ground Control and IE. If serious about handling it is the only way to go.

Marshall,

Would you happen to know of anyone that has a spare front coilover setup they're planning on selling? I might be convinced to go that route, if for no other purpose than it will give me something to do on the next rainy weekend.
