Does anyone have the dimensions for the original BMW 2002 battery which sits on the battery tray? I believe the original was made by Varta ref: 61211362314 and 55amp. Today BMW is offering a new battery ref: 61218377139 also 55 amp. But I do not know if the size is the same and BMW does not give details. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. [/b]

The BMW Exide white replacement battery is 7 x 9 and 7 inches tall and is 50Ah (61 21 7 567 181). Exide has been the supplier since 2005 or so.

and once you figure out the maximum size that'll fit on the tray, taking into account where the respective terminals are, you can get a wal-mart or Costco battery for maybe $50 that will work just fine, with the big advantage of super-easy return/trade-in policy.

Walmart has 'em for about $50. You'll need a thin wood shim (twice the thickness of a yardstick) to place between the battery and the inner fender well, but it doesn't show.

I have a Costco battery in my car. I couldn't be happier with em and I think I paid about $53 with tax. I love their batteries, I've had one in all my vehicles for many years now!
