    thanks @tech71 - i acquired the car as a non runner and it's been garaged for about 40 yrs. So no idea if fuel guage is working. There is a small amount of old gas that been sitting inside the tank (you can see by the gas line on the bottom of the tube however i'm not seeing any weeping areas that look 'wet' on the bottom.

    Hi everyone - enjoying a '2 shower day' here in Virginia with some work on the car. Today's project is remove the gas tank and disassemble filter tube/pickup. Question 1. I'm a little stuck in terms of removing the tube from the lid. This comes apart, right? Otherwise i'm not sure how to inspect and clean the filter. Question 2. As for the tank itself, aside from a lot of build up and crap that needs to get cleaned out out I plan on derusting with nuts and bolts and industrial vinegar then doing the POR15 treatment. That seems to be the favorite across the search. thanks for the assist!

    I gotta imagine it's a connection. Even a somewhat loose nut holding a grouding wire will create starting issues. Make sure your terminals are really clean and güttentight

    I started a blog to on my full restoration. I quickly came to realize my task list was sooo long that I couldnt ever find time to document a project completion it in a thoughtful way. I might as well use the time degreasing something. That said, for those who keep up with theirs, they have a true prize for themselves at the planned end of their project. If anything do it for yourself and every one else is secondary.

    Message is out to machinist to see if he can find anything on the crank. The engine was rebuilt by Miller and Norburn in the late 70’s but hard to say if this was them or ‘Hans and Fran’s’. In the short term, good to know I don’t need to repair or remediate which was my concern. This flywheel looks great otherwise

    I didnt find a pilot bearing in the recess and the crank is with my machinist so can’t X ref at the moment. Looked too intentional to be accidental. This is reassuring tho.

    Hey folks, spent an hour or so cleaning up my 6 bolt flywheel. Discovered what seem like 3 marks or punctures on the inner bearing? They stand proud of the bearing surface so are sharp to the touch. This is where my inexperience shows up but I can not imagine why they would be there or how they showed up. I don't recall any issues removing the fly upon disassembly of the engine and looking at my pics while doing so shows no sign of struggle getting it off. Would appreciate some help solving and what to do next?

    I had a great time walking the field at my first vintage. Never seen so many e30 M3s and 2002 tourings in my life. That one in florida paint had me green with envy. Hats off to the older gent driving a '70 1600. Original owner. That car was truly an inspiration to my project at home. Great conversations with folks, too. Although didn't come across any FAQ'rs. In fact some folk had never heard of it? Looking forward to getting mine there some day.

    Hey folks, i'm looking for the center pad that belongs to this wheel. Note that this wheel is different than the 3 spoke/horn button wheels commonly found. This is the US Spec version sometimes referred to as the fire/strike wheel. Please see the reference photo of my wheel (top) and the part i'm looking for (bottom)

    ya'll do not disappoint. Thanks for the history lesson here. Looking at the other thread I found the Vintage BMW Steering Wheel group on facebook and am going to try and find the center cap. Let me know if you have any add'l leads to sourcing. I'll check ebay too. The rest of the wheel should clean up really well. Thank you again! Joe

    Hi folks - had a great time at the vintage and while making my rounds came across this early steering wheel. Picked it up for $40. It’s in decent condition and would be a welcome swap for the 3 button/horn version in my 69. can anyone help me ID what it came out of originally? Maybe 1600 or NK? also I need to find the center cap to match.

    I'll be there sans car as what I've sold into "management" as R&D for my ongoing 69' project. Also reserved a RV spot at Hot Spring Resort with my 72' airstream. Nice to bring my two hobbies together. Really looking forward to putting faces and beers with forum handles.

    I’ll wait for the replacement pp to arrive before taking it anywhere. Is there a disc (228mm) folks tend to like. I see blunt had a few options ranging from $50 to $200. Keep in mind - non agrees I’ve driver here

    I bought the one on ebay. Made offer for $45 plus shipping and seller accepted. Thank you, Thank you @tech71 On to the flywheel. Relatively good shape. Starter side of the teeth show some wear but no chips or damage. If i were to take this to a machinist to clean up is there anything unique to these cars I should inform?

    rotates smoothly without feeling gritty or with roughness. mating surface is stained but also smooth.

    In the vids but here's a couple stills. The black areas on the mating surface are just raised enough you can feel barely feel the texture but it's there.
