  1. If all you're after is a color change, try spray painting the inside of the cluster housing. I painted mine orange where it was originally white, and the instruments have a nice glow to them. And the rheostat still works! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  2. Success! PB Blaster last night, and a 3 second pull on the trigger of an impact wrench this morning, and it zipped right out. Glad I didn't have to do that one with the head in the car. And the engine is a swap - an old Eric Kerman rebuild from the late '80s. So the head and the pistons match. Probably has less than 30k miles on it at this point, and hopefully the repaired head will make the car fun to drive again.
  3. Replacing the 121 head that had cracked on my '74 2002. Got a replacement head from a fellow forum member, and had everything redone at a local machine shop. Now I'm starting to reassemble things, and I see that I need to change the heater connection port on the back of the head to the later, larger diameter fitting. A 22 mm box wrench, a hammer, and some swearing have failed to break it free so far. Anyone have any tips on this, or should I look into swapping hoses instead of fittings? I have considered breaking out my impact wrench, but I'm not sure if that's taking a risk. Do not want to damage my "new" head at this point - too far into it to start over.
  4. Need a replacement for my cracked head. Will consider bare or rebuilt or anything in between. Mine is cracked between intake and exhaust in #2 cylinder and my machine shop guy says it's a tricky thing to weld. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  5. I remember being a little boy, going to a BMW dealership in Queens with my Dad to drool over the cars. Was Bavarian Motors in Queens Plaza, under the El? Had my first ride in a 1600-2, reportedly sitting in the salesman's lap while my father flogged it around the back streets. Alas, it would be 18 more years before I bought the family's first BMW - a 75 2002. Dad had bought a 1969 Mercedes instead. Congratulations, Mike, on your long-term ownership! (My first 02 has long since gone to the scrap heap, but I've always had at least one in the fleet for the last 30 years) Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  6. Take the vacuum hose to the brake booster off at the valve cover and plug the hole. Brian McCarthy
  7. How is your idle? I had the booster diaphragm rupture on my '74, and the braking effort went up exponentially, but the idle also went to hell due to the massive vacuum leak. Maybe time to look at the calipers. Frozen calipers will give you a very firm pedal, but not much braking! Brian Brian McCarthy
  8. Try 2002AD. I bought one from them a year or so ago and it works great. Brian McCarthy
  9. This is a mystery I ponder every now and then. I got my keychain (and I guess brochure, but I don't know where that went) back in 2002. But the car had been in pieces, unregistered since 1992. And I had moved twice in the meantime. How did they find me? Inquiring minds want to know. I wonder if any of the parts vendors I was supporting at the time tipped off BMW. Brian McCarthy
  10. The headlights are powered only when the ignition is on, so you should be looking at Terminal 15 for continuity to 56. This isn't shown clearly on the wiring diagram in the factory manual (don't see 15 at all), but a spare switch shows that to be true IRL. 30 gives you parking and dash lights. Brian McCarthy
  11. $1500 sounds like a lot of money for a parts car. I recently purchased an 88 325 with 140k for $750. It's a bit rough, lots of deferred maintenance issues, but it's drivable. Brian McCarthy
  12. Check your brake vacuum booster. Had a leak in mine that caused similar idle symptoms. Ireland rebuild was about $200 + shipping. Brian McCarthy
  13. Seats still available. $400 negotiable, pickup or drop off in NY Metro area.
  14. Deal fell through. Seats still available!
  15. Seats are in excellent condition. No rips or holes. Driver's seat fabric is slightly worn. Includes mounting brackets for 2002 application - bolts to factory location. Also have 2 yards of matching corduroy fabric for rear seats or door panels. $450. Pickup in NY Metro area preferred, or possible handoff at '02 Fest East this Sunday.
  16. I'm 10 years older than my '74. I bought it (my 2nd '02) in 1990 - soon enough I'll have had it for half my life!
  17. I just got a nice set of gently used ADS (or a/d/s/ if you prefer) 320i speakers, and I'd like some ideas on speaker placement, and where to mount the crossover. (Its a 5-inch midrange and 2" tweeter arrangement, with a crossover in a separate box) One thought is putting the midrange in the "normal" speaker spot and the tweeter in the upper front corner of the door. Another idea is to put the mid in the front kickpanel and the tweeter on the door. This way the crossover can be mounted inside the car rather than wedged in the door. Any pics to share? Thanks.
  18. Yes, the Euro lights use single filament bulbs, and are intended to be the turn signal. The parking light was inside the headlight assembly ("City Lights"). As I recall, the wiring harness kind of looks like the parking light wire had been extended by the factory to reach the turn signal housing. As of the late 60's US law required an amber marker light visible from the front and side of the car, hence the bubble shape of the US lights. European law did not seem to have the same requirement.
  19. My body shop used Sikkens paint, and they too said they couldn't make the exact formula for Golf (070). There was one component that wasn't available any more to make it the "factory" way (environmental regulations or some such). They were able to make an equivalent color with a different mix of tints. I think it's a bit brighter than original. Can't really tell unless it's standing next to another Golf '02.
  20. If you're in deep enough to remove the vertical trim, might as well take off the horizontal piece first. As Toby said, it tends to rust under there. Drill the poprivets out carefully, and use OEM metric rivets when reassembling.
  21. Saw something similar in my '75 once, just before I rolled to a stop on the side of the highway. The bearing at the top of the distributor shaft failed and the points stopped functioning.
