  1. Hi-- Before I scan in all the Delta Mark 10 manual, here are the instructions for the Western Controls trigger sensor that has also worked flawlessly. Note that JPG files are all I have that are small enough to post. When i get the Delta manual ready page-by-page I'll have to see how many postings I need to get it all up, but I'll work at it. Well, I guess I need one more to get the first page up! Larry
  2. Well, I found the manual; now to scan in the 26 pages (less positive ground instructions!) and see if they are small enough to post. Larry
  3. Hi-- A Delta Mark-10 ignition was about the first addition to my'73 when it was a month or two old; it performed flawlessly for many decades and I still have it. I added a Western Controls distributor cam sensor after about 5 years; no more pinnts to gap or lubricate! If Mike does not have the assembly/ instalation manual I probably do. Also, the Mark 10-C added multiple/variable spark timing and appeared in a different case. Larry
  4. Hi-- Beck posted a number of NT49MD-12 photos on the general Discussion page (where more of us can see his great work); see [http]. Also, one photo on the photo page looks great on my computer, but when shrunk to 3-times thumbnail size and printed (twice) it seems less appealing. So here it is, in a larger format, so everyone can see it better. It also shows why, on his test drive, Beck arrived on TI after sunset. Larry
  5. Hi Beck-- Thanks for all of your work, and for posting the photos; as I expected they are fine! I'm glad the santa hill climb demonstrated how unique San Francisco can be without additional excitement. If others want a copy of the route instructions and photo page DOC files, send me an e-mail. Larry
  6. to-- BpBates: Thanks for your comments, and for the others I've heard. And also, thank you for posting your photos-- they're always fun to look at (especially when they show '74 Malaga tii's!). Larry
  7. Way to go, Derek-- I'm counting on at least 3 '74 Malaga tii's to make an appearance!
  8. While we prefer BMW's, we realize that sometimes people show up in alternative cars. If nothing else, let me know Saturday night or later and I can e-mail the Word documents to you so you can run the NT49MD-12 rally after your car is back together! Larry
  9. NT49MD-12— Not the 49 Mile Drive, Saturday 15 December in 2012 Just a reminder: Not the 49 Mile Drive-- next Saturday, 15 December. Meet at Ocean Beach, San Francisco, across the Great Highway from Beach Chalet, between 9:00 and 9:30 AM. While you can drive solo, a navigator (or even 3!) will make it more fun and provide more eyes to spy the photo locations as you motor around The City. I drove the route yesterday; it's fun and you will even learn about some new locations that will never be on the historic 49 Mile Drive. SF native Beck prepared the route and is taking photos for everyone to ID. We'll continue our conversations at the rally end on TI over pizza (oh-oh, giving away a NT49MD rally stop; but all of you will need to know the end location before you start anyway). Check my previous post for additional details and links. See you there!

  11. Hello Diathermic- When participants arrive at Ocean Beach to start, at least a few have no navigator. There is usually a place for another person in at least a car or two. I can vouch, based on a few years I drove solo, that rallys are better with a crew of 2 or more (but too many directors can create havoc!). Feel free to join the group as we gather at Ocean Beach and if you do not find a ride by yourself we can announce your availability at the driver's meeting. Oh, be sure to bring a handkerchief: while I realize that "drooling over" is a figure of speech, some of the cars that appear (to rally or just mingle) can be exciting for a 2002 aficionado! Larry
  12. Hi-- Actually, I first compiled the list when I still had my '73. But all 2002's use separate compartments for stop and tail lamp functions, so each bulb has a single filament. The only 2-filament bulbs in a 2002 are in the front turn signal that also acts as a sidemarker and parking lamp. If you look carefully at Tom's photo the square taillamp seems to have the upper lamp operating (the taillamp; it might, however, be a reflection from an adjacent headlamp or sun reflection).
  13. NT49MD-12— Saturday 15 December in 2012 Rally time in San Francisco! Join BayArea 02 on December 15 (3rd Saturday in December) as we rally around San Francisco in our annual Not the 49 Mile Drive. As before we will meet at Ocean Beach (across The Great Highway from Beach Chalet on the West end of Golden Gate Park; Fulton St. is the cross street and the entrance to the Ocean Beach parking lot) between 9 and 9:30 AM. Following our drivers (and navigator’s) meeting, we hope to have all cars away by 10:00 AM. After a couple of hours driving the major, minor and hidden roads of San Francisco we will meet again at a restaurant for lunch and to review the photos that each car has numbered in the order observed during the rally. This year San Francisco native Beck Diefenbach is reviewing and exploring the roads that make San Francisco famous to include in the route, helping us find the hidden treasures and postcard views that make us glad we live in the Bay Area. We are also considering options for the lunch restaurant, since Red’s Java House yielded their pier parking to the America’s Cup adventure. Join us for the fun “gimmick” rally, meet up with your friends, learn and enjoy some of San Francisco’s road history and share some of your BMW tales. Although you can drive solo, we recommend bringing a navigator (in Wells Fargo jargon, someone to ride “shotgun” although we do not expect any arrows flying through your car). During the rally your navigator can number the photos we provide in the order you see them on the route. To see photos from some of the previous “NT49MD” rallys, look at [http] and [http] (Tom Jones’ 2007 rally photos and discussion about last year’s NT49MD). Watch this forum for the latest details, but be sure to mark 15 December on your calendar for the NT49MD-12 rally!

  15. Hi-- For rear combo lamp function locations, realize that the amber center (or red if you have that) is the turn signal while the white lens is for the backup lamp. For the others, see the photo that Tom Jones took on the NT49 MD in 2007, showing round and square lamps with brakes applied at a signal in San Francisco. You can see that the square lamp has the lower section for the stop function while the round taillamp uses the lower-inner segment for stop. Larry

  17. Hi-- I learned to drive on a Peugeot; I also learned how to change (and mess up) a sparkplug on that car, and how to clean a bronze mesh oil filter and a cotton gauze/oil immersed air filter. While Peugeots were winning the Paris-Dakar rallys then, our engines have tighter tolerances (and we use hypoid, not worm, differentials). Larry
  18. Hi-- Roger Kraus Racing in Castro Valley [roger@krausracing.com] sells tires and related services for competition and street cars. If they do not modify suspension parts themselves they must know shops that can. Good luck! Larry
  19. Hi-- For the best discussion, see Redline tech articles: Transmission lubricants [http] and products for BMW's [http]. While these articles are, of course, Redline biased they also explain my experiences with Redline MTL and other lubricants. They do not state that BMW originally recommended GL1 grease in 2002 transmissions to avoid corrosive additives common in GL4 and GL5 petroleum greases (for hypoid EP use). MTL used to be MTL85, but I think cold temperature stiffness encouraged Redline to decrease the cold temperature viscosity slightly. I used Redline 20W-50 engine oil once in a truck manual transmission (before MTL was available...); it made the shifting easier but did not eliminate the grunch during shifting the truck had since new. MTL would have been a better choice but I sold the truck before MTL appeared! Larry
  20. Hi- Redline MTL has a measured amount of friction to make syncros work better. A while back I lived about 50 miles from CD's new vinyard/home. We bought a 35K mile gently used Nissan 4WD station wagon for a "winter rat"; the 2nd gear syncro was slow and I refused the dealer's warranty option to rebuild a "maybe faulty" trans. After a number of months finding a work-around for the factory fill plug tool (one reason the dealer did not change the transaxle lube per factory spec), I put in all 5 quarts of Redline MTL. It solved the slow syncro problem without letting the Cortland NY dealer mess up again (they proved generally incompetent on this and the other similar cars in town). Redline MTL is a little thinner now than 80 weight GL1 grease (30 weight motor oil is within the viscosity range of 80 weight grease), but it still works fine. It's a lot better than motor oil, especially in colder areas, even if the motor oil has jojoba oil elixir. Larry
  21. I used to have a set, 6" wide with 27mm offset; they were designed to fit a 2002. The factory painted them silver, so the Polish wheels obviously have polished rims and a darker coat of paint.
  22. Hi-- I recommend Superior Auto Upholstery, 1128 Erickson Rd, Concord Calif. 94520, 925-689-9440. Jose completely reupholstered my wife's E28 front seats about 5 years ago, repairing the springs, cutting foam to fit and using BMW fabric that looked great. The BMW pads were just NLA so Double-02 could not provide them and Armand's in Walnut Creek wanted to "preserve" the 20-year-old worn out pads. Jose also mechanically repaired and replaced foam in my 25-year-old Konig seats (they still looked and felt good, but they needed a little help after my roll-over), then made removable grey covers that complimented the black interior of tii; he charged $518. Reupholstery costs vary a lot, depending on the cover material: $400 could be vinyl or low-end fabric and of course leather is at least double the cost.
  23. Hi-- Seat springs can be fixed, but a professional repair may not be in the price category you're looking for (typically part of a recover package for $400 or so). You can also buy seats at Double-02 Salvage and similar places. But you may be happiest looking for a part-out car (I think someone in Sacramento has one in disassembly right now). And until your seat is repaired, wear armor! Larry
  24. Hi-- I agree with Mike. Take a look at [http] and notice how your lenses look a lot like the headlamps. Scroll down to the Round Auxiliary Lamps section and note that the Tango (Series 40) driving lamp has many fewer prisms, while the fog lamps (white and amber) have lots of prisms but none oriented at the angles shown on your lenses. The angled prisms provide the characteristic European headlamp beam, while the foglamp prisms spread the light over a wide area with only minimum uplight. Unfortunately my Z-beam with a broken lens is a PAR-56 (7"), so your lens would not fit. Larry
  25. Hi Denny-- Closing the loop, the bracket and expansion tank arrived! I performed a vacuum check and the tank has no leaks. Now to work over the rust, reinforce the flaked bracket area and paint everything and I'll be ready to install a new pump. The rusty areas reminded me of the few years I spent living in the middle of New York State, trying to keep a winter rat running while my '73 2002 sat on blocks in the garage awaiting salt-free roads. I hope that all of your other sales proceeded as smoothly! Larry
