  1. Hello everyone, I Was driving up to school at RPI, when off US-222 just beyond Kutztown PA I spotted a green late model 2002. It was hanging out in a parking lot with some other BMWs (E-30, z-3). Anyone here?
  2. From the photo, it seems that it is sitting high in the front of the hood. First thing to do is MARK the current location of all the bolts, this allows you to at best get back to where you where. Then, loosen the metal locking tabs at the rear of the hood, get some lithium grease in there if they refuse to move freely. Remove the grills, and loosen the bolts that hold the hood's hinges to the chassis. If gravity doesn't do the trick, buy a six-pack, and invite the neighbor over. Once you get the front of the hood the way it needs to be, tighten the bolts up. At this point you will in all likelihood messed some other bit of the alignment up. Move the torsion bar mounting screws in small (millimeter) increments until you get it to sit straight. The torsion bar adjusts the horizontal and vertical alignment at the windshield. If the torsion bar wont make it move sufficiently, or warps the hood to the point that it wont lock down, your going to need to adjust the hinges. The torsion bar can do quite a bit of adjusting, just go in very small increments, "just a smidge" (if I may use a technical term) I have managed to straighten slightly off hoods through the adjustment of these mounts, and the mounting tabs. I did Emily for Jonathan the other day, took me 30 min to get it to sit perfect when latched. He didn't want to take the grills off, but you don't have a choice from that photo. I have also done this on my car, and it works perfectly, I can send you some photo's of the positioning in that car if you think it will help If you have to do the Hinges.... Fortunately, you left the grills off for this sort of occasion. Get a deep socket through the metal cut-outs in the front clip, and loosen the bolts that hold the hinges to the hood. You can move the hood forward and backwards from here, as well as giving it skew. The hood should sit about 1cm forward of the windshield, there shouldn't be a gap, just a small bit of space (need photo, send me an email) Straighten the hood as best as you can, having that neighbor over comes in handy.... Do this all with the hood down unlatched on the car, lubricate till it moves easily, makes life so much easier. Once done, bolt the hinges back down, and re-do the torsion bar. You shouldnt have to come back to those hinges again, the torsion bar will be able to do the rest. The key is to think before you leap, if the left rear sits high, and wont latch, think what could be causing the interference. Don't adjust for adjustments sake, you could have it, just have that one tinny thing just a wee bit off. One final thing, when you finally test to make sure it latches down, if you feel any extra resistance, dont force it. Something isnt quite right, (move metal tabs forwards or back a bit) Do a search for Hood Stuck Shut, AVOID, its a real pain in the ass. Good Luck, Hope this helps, Feel Free to email. -Dan
  3. Your where I was last year. I just graduated, and am taking my 02 up to college with me as soon as possible. The key for me was having experienced people on hand. Lets face it shop manuals, and this forum are fantastic resources, but nothing beats seeing it done in person. DUDONLY, RedskinsJBS, and JGMGTI, have all helped me get my car in gear. Find someone nearby (check the 02 map I created [do a forum search for google map]) and become friends. The 2002 is a great little buggy, and having the trunkspace to carry all your books / athletic gear / tools / dead bodies is nice. As for the one-year-car idea, dont bother, even if that is your plan, your going to find yourself way to attached to yours to sell. Its an investment, before you know it that money you saved up from your summer job is going to end up in gas, oil, and those little upgrades you really really want. Just make sure your willing to put in the time with the car, and she'll run sweet. I used this checklist when I inspected my car for purchase. Bring a jack and go under the car. http://laudeman.com/bmw_checklist.html http://www.bmw2002faq.com/content/view/80/32/ Good Luck, and happy motoring, its always good to have some fellow "young-know-it-all-punks" on this board.

  9. Hello fellow 02'ers, the google map is coming along well. What we are missing are shops, please add your bodyman-paintman-mechanic-etc. The map is below. Please be sure to change the title of the beacon to your name or forum id, and be sure to include a forum id somewhere in the blurb. Do not enter any text on the left hand side of the map, read the instructions first! If you are even the slightest bit uncomfortable or confused email me you information and I will add you in. Thanks! http://local.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=111206129791824318088.000470b4d5cf4bced56be&ll=66.791909,-42.890625&spn=162.094926,360&t=h&z=1

  12. Howdy, basic instructions on how you replace the spring pads. 1) Remove wheel etc 2) Un-do bolt that holds shock onto arm. (On control arm?) 3) Use spring compressors to compress rear springs 4) Use booty power to remove compressed springs 5) Pad is on the top 6) While in there check for rust, fix any you find! POR-15/ Rust-Proofing paint 7) There is a little notch in the pad, fit it on the shock tower 8) Do this in reverse I can put up a scan of the shop manual if you wait 24 hours. No guarantees on the above steps.

  19. It does not have the greatest volume, you really have to crank the volume to hear anything. Codfish, to the best of my knowledge, Dudley has an original paint job, which when he bought the car was pink. He spent hours working it with *shameless plug* Meguiars Ultimate Compound, which really brought the red back, search back a bit, and you will find some before and after shots of his car. About the rolled fenders, once again I do not believe so, it may be possible that the PO did it for him, but it has not been rolled *check with Dudley, he is back in town today* Let me know if anyone else is up for a weekend drive.... Best of luck, happy motoring.
  20. Dudley used to have a rotted out wheel well, he cut that out, and used a BMW replacement part. Its not a flare, its just a replacement bit.
  21. Check on the forum for video of this drive as done last week. Let me know which day this weekend works best. I figure it can be a day thing, with a couple of runs, and a lot of talking and hanging around. Sorry if its short notice....
