  1. Might consider spraying the lenses a clear amber hobby paint on the outside (Tamiya clear orange model paint or amber "stained glass" Krylon) and maybe go over that with a UV resistant clearcoat over it to protect the finish and against rapid fading. Havent personally done this but could be an option for you to freshen them up. maybe practice first on a US bulbous version as nobody wants those anymore, until everyone has the Euro ones and the US ones are all gone. I'm thinking of trying this method on some extra faded side marker reflectors i have.

  2. My car won't start after sitting for a while. Not sad, just kind of annoyed. Actually, like really annoyed. Because I don't know how to fix it. ?

Some people don't care about the look. But it is never a bad thing is it?

But surely everyone cares about the handling?

Some people don't care about the look nor the handling, some do, some looks, some not, some handling, some not!

Let's kill this thread as the original poster asked about 165 R70-13 size tires, and hasn't responded to any of the comments. Go buy some Achilles tires on Amazon.

  4. There's nothing wrong with the Vredsteins, in fact, they are fine tires. But with the CN36s $30 USD cheaper than the Vreds from TireSmack, geez get the damn Pirellis from Lucas and don't look back.

It's definitely is a fun philosophical debate of these cars - I agree that it isn't a tii any more - it's a modified Tii!

There probably is a parallel situation with a new 335i - if you put a chip in it, is it still a 335i?

This car is not for everyone though. I've been fortunate to live with both a stock (ish) tii and this car for 18+ years and so I which one was better just depended on my mood.really

Yes, @markmac. I really wanted you or @inkatouring to own this car next. ? But both of you already have gorgeous cars - and Alpinas too!

How come you're selling this one?

I've had fifteen 02s, and only one with bottlecaps.  I thought it was the cat's, but this was a while ago.  Later I missed selling my old wheels to the smelter b/c the price for aluminum had dropped; I think my last set went to the landfill with wornout rubber still on them.

One thing I remember about 14x6 E30 alloys - it was considerably harder to park.  Maybe old stiff tires were the problem, but I never bought new tires while I had that car so couldn't say.

Aloha man - yeah the wider wheels with shifted offset can make it tuffer in the steering dept. Espech if u have a smaller then stock diameter steering wheel as I got - a sick Nardi that needs 2 B restored. Gotta have a lil muscle for the lil ones, but no big whoop

Also be aware that early cars had clear windshields and the later ones were tinted.  I am not sure where the cutoff happened.

Most of the glass you will find will be lightly tinted, like the later style.

Another thing to keep in mind is that many people have reported fitment issues with the URO seals, so the BMW rubber is probably worth the extra expense.

AFAIK you could order tinted (green cast) back in the day. Not sure what years these were available as an option.

Comments regarding the correctness of certain components on this restoration remind me of why our chapter stopped organizing an annual Concours d'Elegance.  For several years I was chairman of the committee that organized the event and one of my jobs was recruiting and training judges for the various classes.  What we found was that those members who had exceptional knowledge of a particular model usually had a car entered, an automatic disqualification.  Others who had detailed knowledge were usually local shop owners who might have performed work on entrants cars, another disqualification.  That left us with club members who were willing to be judges, a somewhat thankless job as the entrants who didn't win their class were often willing to tell us how we got it wrong.  One way we found to avoid the swamp of judging was to base it simply on condition and cleanliness.  We weren't about to start removing hubcaps to check the date code on wheels, for example.

These days our most popular events are gatherings involving cleaning up your car and bringing it out to share with others.  No judging, no trophies just sharing of stories and tips on how to keep the old cars on the road.  I'm not saying there is anything wrong with judged competition,  just that it takes a lot of effort and willingness to put up with some of the above issues.  I know a couple of the LOTA judges and they are as knowledgable and fair as you could hope for.  Hats off to them and to the owners who win trophies.

It's certainly a beautiful car given a thorough nut-and-bolt restoration. Insane money must be in this thing. In the current market, where these cars are showing greatly increased valuation/more attention from investors, would it be a pity if someone buys this thinking it's restored as original, and not to someone's tastes and/or parts availability?

My perspective: too bad for them.

I'm looking to have my outer door handles re-chromed and believe I need to fully disassemble them so that only the door handle goes into the chrome bath. To that end I have to remove the key lock mechanism in it's entirety and not just the tumbler. There appears to be two roll pins that need to be removed in order for the key lock mechanism to be separated from the door handle.

If anyone has done this before I'd appreciate any input. Would also like to know what size the roll pins are so I can purchase new ones for reassembly. They look small, I'm guessing 1/16th" at the most but feel it's going to be hard to measure that small a hole to get an accurate measurement. Would these pins even be a domestic size or would they be metric? Thank you.

I haven't done this, but had a set of good used door handles re-keyed to my replacement ignition switch key over in Berkeley. I'm saving them for when I do the body resto. Are roll pins done once removed? You should consider getting new handles with your current key code from Maximillian or your local dealer. Save this project for later if you become bored/when there is that thin slice of time when nothing else is wrong with your car
