An Alfa club member shared a Super Drive Sunday (02/02/20) rally route. The staging time is probably around 8:30 - 9:00 am in the Sea Bowl parking lot in Pacifica. The lunch stop is in Boulder Creek and returns to Pacifica. The unofficial rally is open to all with no club affiliation.

Never been a fan of the bottlecap wheels.  I had them on a 5 series and they just rubbed me the wrong way.  (I know this is all opinion but, just say'en)

I put a set of the stock e21 basket weave wheels on my 02.  I don't have a picture of the car with them on right now because we're in the process of tearing it down for the restoration but, here's what they look like on the 3 series.

That's one sharp lookin' ride. It's not hard to see why people want to go for the Euro Look - very handsome, if original, and if a conversion is done right. The mesh-spoked alloy wheels have never really gone out of style, except for ones that were painted with gold centers (or white or body color). But they've been making a slow comeback. The all-silver without the polished outer rims just have a classic look.

99.999% of all people who see our cars will probably be thinking "what a cool little car"  Not "Phfft! bottle caps? how tacky"

    I can live with that?

You're right on the f-ing money there. My car had bottelschnitzels on it when i bought it, I never really liked them too much and pined to replace them with something else, meanwhile a good friend of mine thought that they looked cool. At the time i didn't have the money or means to replace them with something i had always envisioned, it was my daily driver, expensive shit always seemed to be breaking...and to me it was just a luxury to replace the wheels and tires if the tires weren't worn down to the treads. But I have not had one person criticize nor praise the wheels I eventually replaced them with (which was a big project including sourcing, blasting, priming/masking/painting and modifying the center caps to accept a Roundel, they still just think "oh what a cute car!". But I still like 'em...even though i'm on track to try something new for a while.

the e-21 turbines look great on any year car...imho and easy to find, relatively cheap or used to be

Sure. Not an ideal ET for 02, like E21 steelies, or E30 wheels, but look better on SpongeBobs IMO. I was actually kinda serious about having them on an i3 - a passing cerebral fantasy.

They're probably still cheap, but who knows, as E21's are starting to get their due respect

Funny you should mention that. I just received a package from Walloth and Nesch last week. I received the center section of a Euro 02 bumper that has the cut outs for the license plate lights.  I already have the seam covers, license plate lights and new bumper rear strip. Now I have a winter project.

Congrats - soon you will be completely converted - was W&N cheaper than 02bumpers? I learned 10 years ago that BMW factory chrome will only hold up for a few years. May want to have it chromed again, before you install, not kidding

The round-hole CMR rims (marketed solely by Alpina who also “owned” the design) are much rarer than the triangular-hole CMR rims (marketed generally under the Borrani brand name, Ruote Borrani being a division of CMR). Same CMR quality. Same heavy weight. Same good looks.

Not the answer I was hopin' for, Steve! Totally disappointed ?. I like the ALPINA round holes better.

The Alpina steelies were only available in 5” and 5 1/2” sizes. Borrani steelies were available in 5”, 5 1/2”, 6”, and 6 1/2” sizes. Obviously one could “band“ or re-barrel either style to achieve your desired width. But, frankly, I have not yet seen any Alpina steelies that were widened, whereas I’ve seen quite a few Borrani steelies, widened to as much as 9”.

No need for me to go wider than 5", so another reason to not care as much about the Borrani's (but WOW what a name...visions of 1966 Ferrari 330 GT's fill my head....wires with triple-eared knockoffs, fat tires...

Frankly, it’s a win-win decision: either rim is gorgeous, as long as you’re not trying to reduce weight!

Sure. Going on a diet was not one of my New Year's Resolutions. And I don't want "performance" in a wheel, cuz I'm a wheel whore and I can find tires for any wheel I want. But, me still likey round hole better.

  8. So what's more coveted - the Round-Holes or the Triangle-Holes? Or, is it all in the eyes of the Be-Hole-der? Let's get this controversy started! ?

As a side note, this will be the fourth set of wheels I’ve put on this car in 3 years; I’ve decreased in size from 15” to 14” and now these 13”. Sounds nuts when I say it out loud....

I ran stock 2002 13" steel wheels for a few years and in 1984, I switched to E30 bottlecaps. I ran them on my 02 for over 20 years. In 2005, I switched to E30 basketweaves. The problem with E30 Style 5 basketweaves is the center cap. Some low life would steal them and they cost over $ 60 new. I turned into a wheel whore in an effort to find Style 5 basketweave center caps.  I threw in the towel when I had 13 basketweaves total (on my car and in my parts stash).. In 2009, I went with 15X6 Alpina replica wheels but the wheels had an offset for an E21 (ET 12) so they didn't last long on my tii.  In 2010. I went with 15X7 ET25 Rota RB wheels. They stayed on my tii for a few years but I fell out of love with them. I now have a set of 15X7 ET25 Centra Type 11 wheels. I like these wheels, very rare and they have a huge lip on them. I also have a set of 15X7 ET26 MSW basketweaves in my parts stash.  You have to think of wheels as a fashion accessory for your car, the right wheels will make your car stand out. Bottlecaps are not a fashion accessory. I admit it, I have a set of bottlecaps. They have snow tires mounted on them and they are currently on my E30.  +1 on comments that bottlecaps make great roller wheels.  Looking through this wheel database will give you some ideas.on how to spend your money. https://www.bmw2002faq.com/wheels/bmw2002/

So you had the centers of your 15X7 ET25 Centra Type 11 wheels painted black? Looks Clean N' Fresh, especially with the added Roundels on the center caps! Have you thought about going full Euro Style and deleting the rear bumper over riders, and replacing the center bumper bar with one that has the chrome bumper seam covers and the integrated license plate lamps to complete The Look?

  10. WOW!!! Happy Birthday, Sahara SpongeBob SquareTail with the controversial bottelschnitzels that's causin' so much fuss in some members' eyes in another post! Is it RHD or r u just parked on the wrong side of the street? ?

@HarryBMW are u using diving board bumpers or going for the Euro Look

You may have been looking at too many ROW 1502 brochures that show 1502 SpongeBobs with dog dish-tyle hub caps. I have to agree it's a great look, however not EZ 2 find

In My Humble Opinion, that wheel combo would look wrong in my eyes if you kept the stock North American specification big bumpers. How about some Bottle Caps? Or Bottle Tops? Or some Roundie Factory Alloys still available new (if they are in your budget)????

I'm of the opinion that whatever you like is all that matters.  At least bottlecaps are BMW wheels not some off-tangent wheel configuration with no sole!  I had BBS wheels on my '76 (License Plate "BMW CCA") for years and absolutely loved the way they drove.  I'm now running stock early factory alloys on my '76 (Oh no, you say?)...I love early factory alloy wheels, even though the wide tires I'm running make the ride a bit "spungy"!  Experiment for awhile, and use your least favorite wheels on the car when it goes to the body shop!

    Good Luck,

    John

What wheel configurations are off tangent with no sole? Please don't say Ronal Teddy Bear alloys! Anything not BMW? A "spungy" ride on a SpongeBob SquareTail sounds like a match made Under the Sea and Something You Wish! ?

I'll be contrarian and say that I kinda like bottlecaps, especially on a squaretail car. They're not THAT different from the soup-plate late factory '02 alloys...

I suspect the hate bottlecaps get is about half due to their being the base wheel on most US E30s, so they inspire the same level of love as the M10 318i and the Eta. I genuinely loved my Eta-engined 325, but then my bottlecaps were still relegated to winter wheels, and I had basketweaves for summer!

And since they've been undesirable by the E30 crowd, bottlecaps are essentially worthless in the market, so they carry that "cheap" stigma.

Plus we're now in a new part of the cycle of the 2002. At one point, it's desirable to "update" a car to look like the newer models and keep it from being seen as "old-fashioned." That was 2002s in the late 1970s through the 1990s, when E21 and then E30 wheels were seen as upgrades.

Then in the 2000s E30 wheels were especially popular as a cost-effective way to chase tire availability as decent 13" tires went away. But then even 14" performance tires became hard to find.

Their demise coincided with 2002s reaching the tipping point in their ages when original or "period-correct" starts to become more desirable, as it does with most cars of a certain age. So even with the reintroduction of some 13" performance tires like the CN36, you don't see many '02s with E21 turbines or basketweaves anymore, despite their extra width being a major draw over stock 2002 wheels in the 1980s and '90s. Those looking for maximum performance are going with 15" wheels, and those who look at 13" wheels want something from when '02s were new, if not factory wheels.

TL;DR - Cheap stigma, changing tire tech and collector-car aesthetics combined to kill the desirability of bottle caps.

    who's done pontificating for today

Well said, Dave. I was thinking right along those same lines. Also, most of those searching to add some easily reversible uniqueness to their cars, don't want anything too ubiquitous, which is what the bottelschnitzels have become.

It’s very common to see interiors swapped. This process was happening as early as dealer deliveries, and continued throughout the last 40-50 years, accelerating as interiors aged and deteriorated.

By the by, seats originally had date-stamped identification cards attached to the springs in the seatbacks, accessible by removing the rear panel (6 Philips-head screws) of the seat backs.  Here’s the card from a seat manufactured June 20, 1972 (“20.  6.  72”). This seat is from a 1972 tii totaled in 1974: VIN 2762204, manufactured July 10, 1972.

Regarding setting a higher reserve on this car - near the end of the last Barrett-Jackson broadcast, I heard the announcers say that only one car during the entire multi-day auction had a reserve.  That seemed pretty shocking to me and a little hard to believe, but I never saw any car go unsold or any "reserve is off" comment during the times I was watching.

I watched some of it and am not sure if they tell you on TV that there is an 8% seller's premium charged to the seller and they also collect a 10% bidder's premium from the buyer. That's pretty steep in comparison to everyone's favorite online classic car auction website/service based right here in San Francisco. Not to mention the shipping, taxes, travel, lodging, etc if you actually go to one of these f-ing circuses which need to be factored into it as well. There is no shortage of people who want all the "upgrades"/"mods" on a prospective 2002 - like the turkis car - whether it is "correct" or not

The paint shop that installed the brand new URO seals when they painted our '75 used some kind of black mastic or glue that is letting go of the rubber, but has hardened on the new paint in the door jambs and trunk rim.  Perhaps the URO seals are leaking some kind of plasticiser, or had a mold release compound to which the glue didn't stick?

Anyway, the seals are literally flopping around in the doors jambs, and I want to clean off the glue and start over.  Any suggestions on a glue solvent that won't destroy the paint?  Unless there are other suggestions, I'm going to use WD-40 as a first try.
