Weatherford BMW isn't what it used to be, it was bought by a dealership group. If you want real service for your older BMW your better of going across the street to Moran Motorsports.

Of course...I never tried Moran's. I guess H&B isn't what it used to be and assume Beck's by Lake Merritt is done? I lived in Oaktown for a few years in the mid-oughts, took my car to Bavarian Motor Works once and had a HORRIBLE experience. They said my brakes were done and I had to have them service them otherwise I had to have the car towed away!!! I had it towed away and took it to Ralph Hoch at Import Specialties in Walnut Creek - someone I've known for over 30 years now - the best, most honest, trustworthy and knowledgeable logically troubleshooting mechanic I've ever met - he said the master was a little rusty from being around the salty air but it was fine! He offered to back me up with a complaint to the BBB!  When I had him rebuild the heads on my 67 Beetle in '92, and was ready to take it down to SLO for college, he taught me how to adjust the valves on HIS '71 Type 2 Westfalia, so I could do it myself after 500 miles! Over the years he's owned a Colorado orange 1600 and I think he's been driving a Vanagon Westfalia. I can't recommend Ralph enough if you're in the Bay Area.

My parents and I took their Tii out for a cruise and to visit a few places today, the day that marks fifty years since they bought the car new from Weatherford BMW when they were at 2036 Blake St, Berkeley California. They were car shopping and this day, February 5th 1972, they went to their local BMW dealer and saw this Tii on the showroom floor. It’s been many things through the decades, but most of all, the family sports sedan that it’s designed to be.

Pretty awesome you guys got a spot right out front! Would be cool to see some period pics of the Weatherford on Blake St.   I had a pair of door handles re-keyed to match my replaced ignition switch nearby on University Ave and had my windshield replaced at Frank's (NLA). I spent a lot of time in Berzerkely when I was younger!!!

  3. The Außenlackierung-BMW decal on my November '72-build '73 is not in the usual location above the VIN plate in the engine bay like most of these cars. But, I've seen others located where mine is. Anyone know why some cars have them placed in this location?

I searched the topic and read a few old threads about it but I didn't really see a solid answer, so now that they're "worth more now than ever before" I thought someone might have some updated info. Thx.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, I did a column on this exact process after having to learn by trial and error in those pre-internet days.  PM me for a copy.

I think it would be helpful, Mike, if you would just put all of your columns up in a blog on here, instead of asking people to PM you? Just a suggestion.

  5. Like @Charles in PA said, just go have fun, unless you're looking for a trophy. Although "Concours" (not "Concourse") translates to "competition" - ?  I don't know anything about your car and its "period correctness" or "upgrades". Your profile pic looks like you're running some sort of modern 8-spoke alloy wheel, which many consider an "upgrade", but are not "period correct". Report back after the big show...

I don't have to look up the 507 to know what it looks like.

The 507 was the end result of a misguided decision at BMW to hand build a car for the elite such as Hollywood celebrities etc. Even Elvis Presley had an example. The 507 cost over $10,000 back in 1959-60. That was the price if a single family home back then. This decision nearly led BMW to financial ruin. It was the spartan and minimalist BMW 700, an economy car built for the masses and contemporary of the 507, which saved BMW, not the 507. The BMW 1600-2 exemplifies the same philosophy behind the 700. It is a winning idea.

The Z3, Z8 and Z4, like the 507, could never exist on their own, just like the CEO can't exist without the rank and file and the workers. They are arrogant and impractical cars marketed for the high income white collar professionals and Yuppies such as those in "Frisco's" financial district. And, like the upper echelons of the Capitalist order, they only exist on the backs of their humble workhorses such as the workers and the 1600-2. Sure the Z3,Z8 and Z4 pay homage to the 507. But, is that really something to be prod about ? I don't acknowledge those cars just as I don't acknowledge the bourgeoisie Yuppies.

You highlighted your disgust for the Roundels on the front fenders. Thanks for the cut and paste 507 history lesson, though, bro.

The 66 badge has no roundel associated with it. And, I like that clean and low key look. But, if you're one of those people who likes to advertise the labels on your clothes and walk around with a big BMW roundel on your t-shirt and baseball cap,  you're probably the type that wants to stick a "BMW" roundel all over the car. some people just can’t have enough of BMW roundel logos. They have to be everywhere, on the horn button, on the shift knob, on the wheel caps, on the small caps to the tire stems, on the hood, on the rear panel, stickers on the windows, here, there and everywhere. I believe it is the Z3 or Z4 roadster, I don''t know what it is really called, nor do I care, which has this oversize and obtrusive BMW roundel mounted on the side of both front fenders. The entire car seems to be designed around those roundels which are the centerpiece of the car. I really hate pulling up next to one of these things at the light. I look the other way. The Z4 is like a woman with a breast augmentation and wearing those fake, oversize plastic nipples with little BMW roundels on the tips while attending a cheesy Hollywood party. No Thank You, BMW. I really don't care for your newer cars. And one BMW roundel on the hood is just enough.

Have you ever seen a BMW 507? Look it up, they were built before your early 1600's. That was the inspiration to Z3/Z8/Z4 up to a point...

The column you seek is in the August 2006 BMW CCA Roundel.  It also covers repairing jammed ignition switches, and how to re-key door locks so they will use the same key as the ignition.  If you don't have that issue, PM me.

Mike it's always so nice of you to offer to send people your past Roundel columns. But, is there a reason you don't just upload them here on the FAQ? Legal reasons? You should add them to the Technical Articles section, IMO...

  10. Really nice car - the underside is spotless. The only things I would have done differently would be stock 5Jx13 steel wheels (or the "soup dish" FPS alloys for SpongeBob SquareTail cars) instead of the 5.5Jx13 E21 steel wheels, and to have done the upholstery in Marine Blue vinyl (from World Upholstery?) to match the door panels instead of the lighter blue leather

  11. Consider finding a good used complete door handle, and having it re-keyed to match your ignition and passenger side. Whoever re-keys it should get the internals de-gunked and lubed in the process. I had a set done by a locksmith in Berkeley on University Ave - I think they were called Longs. Maybe there is a good locksmith that specializes in automotive locks & keys in your area? Worth a shot.

Thanks guys, the pump is MISSING!! So I had to get a new one.

Now just need to wire it up.

If this is the case, why worry about replacing the relay? FYI, when I replaced mine after a failed attempt at tearing my old one apart to repair it, I seem to remember the bracket on the replacement pump was different orientation than that of the stock 2002 style, since I believe the replacement part was really made for a different car (VW/Audi I think). So, you *might* need to actually use an original bracket - could have sworn that's what I did -
