No I think the shadows in the photo makes them look widened.  they are CMRs (formerly Borrani?).  Tom

Nope, they are not CMR/Borrani's - Unless that is the company that made wheels for VW in the mid 70's? I don't know. They have the appearance of the E21 steel wheels, with a different offset than the 2002, if you've ever seen that. I don't know the bolt pattern for Mk1 Golf/Scirocco etc. but that's what they look like. and, yes, widened or offset from stock.

So we know exactly when the late USA 02s lost the weights on their VIN tags.

    But John also asked ‘why’?

I read the regulations — yawn — and nowhere does it say stop putting weights on the VIN tag. What would be BMWs rationale to drop the weights?

Another little mystery:  the (at least US spec) '68s had "1968" stamped on the VIN plate, but none of the later ones did.  No good explanation for that either.  I wonder if any model year 1969, but produced in calendar year 1968 (1 Sep-31 Dec) have "1968" stamped on the VIN plates, since BMW went by calendar year and thus would have considered them as 1968 cars.

Anyone out there have a "first series" '69--that is one produced before 1 Jan 1969?  Does the VIN plate have "1968" stamped on it?

Just discovered pics of my first '02, a 1973 Inka 2002, registered SNK500M. It had been abandoned for many years when a friend gave it to me in ~1993.

    SNK500M_3.jpg

We got it running, freed-off the brakes and got it back on the road... i drove it in this scabby condition for a while.

    SNK500M_2.jpg

I dealt with the rust and gave it a new coat of Inka, then drove it around europe for a few years.

    SNK500M_1.jpg

I sold it ~2000 for a few hundred quid in a running-well-but-rusty condition.

There's some info about SNK500M on UK's DVLA website:

Seems it was last heard of in late 2000.....  ?

Those side stripes are cool - dealer option in certain markets? Never seen them before. Looks like it succumbed to coconut cadang-cadang viroid, though!

The best value in a classic Alfa sedan would have to be the uncommon Berlina with the even rarer Alfetta Sport Sedan close behind, if the more modern styling piques your interest

You may be right, or is it the color ?

And, then there are the wheels.

I remember the bottle cap and "+1" and "+2" wheel craze. At one point the bottle caps were commanding top dollar from wrecked new e30s duing the late 80s.  But, these wheels are "HEAVY". Add the equally "HEAVY" tires, and you've probably added 60lbs -100lbs to your car and all in unsprung weight.

I remember way back when I took delivery of my car, complete with bottelkappen that a previous owner bought NEW through Alan Hardy's H&B in Berkeley to replace the original 4.5J x 13 steel wheels and wheel covers. By then, bottelkappen were ubiquitous and when I eventually moved on to a different style wheel when I could afford it, they were still worth next to nothing and I sold them locally to a FAQ member for a Nice Price.

I don't recall them being that "HEAVY", if one were to search this forum, the good ol' c.d. iesel said on several occasions that the 6Jx14 bottelkappen were 14.1 lbs vs the stock 5Jx13 steel wheel = 14.5 lbs

The only thing that was "HEAVY" was the steering, especially along with a smaller Nardi steering wheel

Those extra inches can add a little more weight once you mount the rubber. But I don't agree that would add 60-100 lbs to an 02 with that wheel change. More like 10 lbs at the most.

I have no problem calling anybody out who is marketing and selling heaps of rust for $30K+. (There are people who will attempt to sell their own crap after presenting it in a fancy wrapper). I have no problem calling these people  out in person.  I have a long toilet scroll list of all the melon vendors, supported with specific examples, that I've came across in the 02 community and elsewhere over the past 40 years. It's my little "Black Book".

Perhaps, I should write a book. It's not just the 02 community. You'd be surprised what I have witnessed over the years in this town.

I've also spent the majority of my life in this town, state and country where I personally witnessed the demographic and socio-economic changes described above. And, now, you're suggesting if I don't like it, I should leave. No ! I'm not leaving. I''m speaking out. And, I'm not going to stop, even if you cut out my tongue.

Not sure why you called Magnus (not Marcus) Walker an idiot on this forum, but if you say you will say it to him in person, good on ya, then! I've witnessed the same shit as you as a 4th generation Californian and I'm long over it. Stay sweet!

My old 2000CA ended up there. It was missing the motor and the lights. Twenty years ago I gave it away FREE to an enthusiast . And, it ended up at this dealership a couple of years ago where they were asking between $7 - $10K for it. It had a really clean front grille.  I'm tired of all the BS associated with this hype and jingoism, for God's sake !

There is an idiot (Marcus Walker) in Downtown LA who's advertised and sold Porsche 912s in similar rusty condition for $30K. His background is in fashion and the garment industry where marketing is everything.

Walker set up shop in a large Downtown loft space of the so called "Artist District". Thirty years ago you can rent 5,000 sq, ft of loft space for a mere $900 / month. Now, that same space will cost you $15K - $20K / month. We used to pool our money together and rent the large spaces for next to nothing. After the Tech Yuppies  and .com idiots came in, the prices skyrocketed. It's all Yuppies now.

You're a saint! But not nice to say not so nice things about people behind their backs online. California is a desirable place for many, those that want to be here make do to be able to be here. If not, then on to another state or country

The wheels database here lists a 13x5" version, but not the 7" - based on the info below the 7" version looks legit

Are these something to be interested in?

    Barrett

do you have the full image of the cropped ad you posted? I entered the 13x5 wheel to the db. the center caps are probably harder to find than the wheels themselves!

    Thanks

    They look absolutely great!

But I do believe you can improve on the hand-painted center caps. Perhaps have the BMW roundels professionally re-painted in the correct design, colors, and font. Or perhaps the pre-printed roundels from the square taillight and e21 center caps could be applied on top of the RB Milano center caps? Center caps are a minor detail, but an important finishing touch.

    Congratulations,

    Steve

Steve - if you're worried about a flat vs. convex center cap surface - get some wood dowel or discs of plywood with diameter to fit under the cap to use as a dolly, and a proper hammer to gently flatten the badge mounting surface. I used this method on some Opel center caps so I could adhere flat OEM BMW emblems to 'em.

    Thanks folks, for your suggestions.

Given that there is some rust forming under the window trim along the bottom of the pop-out windows, I think I will have the upper part of the car painted to the beltline, as Mike has suggested.

While I like the 2002, it's not worth putting in $15k (in my opinion).  If I were to spend that kind of money, I would prefer to do so on an e9 (recognizing that those are rust-prone and will need some body repair).  Who knows, I might relent and get the Malaga box some new clothes!

Sounds like you should just to the Maaco route, or sell the car.

my favorite method for painting wheels is

the swiveling base is a great idea! gotta make one of those bad boyz

  13. i've had pretty good results on sandblasted steel wheels, blowing with compressed air, wiping down with mineral spirits, spraying self-etching primer and then Eastwood Argent Silver wheel paint, and following up with their diamond clear satin coat. several coats of each, with light wiping with tack cloth to remove the dust if you wait too long between coats
