BMW water pump Vs. Aftermarket?

Hi,

Are there any performance differences, lifespan observations, concerning the aftermarket water pumps ~$50-60 Vs. the BMW water pump ~$150?

There seem to be quite a few aftermarket pumps out there, are some better than others? I've looked at a couple, and the castings don't look as nice as the BMW, though it seems that the basic design is hard to mess up.

Thanks,

Mark

It's been a little while since I had to buy a new water pump, but, the last time I checked, the dealership pumps were manufactured by Graf, so, if you check with someone like La Jolla Independent (Jeff or Carl) you can probably get the same unit at a substantial cost savings. I'm not sure what BavAuto supplies, and, if you call them, they probably can't (or won't) tell you the marque. Might want to see what Blunt can do for you also. AutohausAZ wants $47.48 for a Graf unit, and, if you add enough additional stuff to get you up to $50, the shipping is free.

....? yes - (BMW Original Teile) Quality & Parts Warrantry of 2-year/Unlimited miles speaks foritself

do you want to redo a repair after inferior/old inventory

imitation gives up ?

do you want to chase a vendor with warranty replacement ?

performance ? if you include reliability with your performance?

how do you know if the china pump isn't missing a few impellor

blades compared to the BMW pump count ?

Casting ? seal ? bearing? machining of fan flange?

On 2002 water pumps Laso is the OEM.

IMHO in both selling and installing what have to be many hundreds of water pumps for 2002s and many hundreds more on various other BMWs and other German makes.... I have used Original BMW, Laso, Hepu, and Graf many many times without problems. I have had Geba leak out of the weep hole as soon as I filled the system with coolant. On other BMW engine applications I have seen Geba bearings fail because their impeller is cast iron instead of the plastic or welded stamped stainless steel of other brands.

On my own car I would not hesitate to use a Graf pump but.... The OE BMW, Laso and Hepu are better made and the OE BMW has the best warranty.

At the moment I can not think of any of the other brands I have seen for sale.....

laso's are despised by the s14 crowd. Im pretty sure i have a laso on my s14 and ive had no issues but i remember reading on s14.net how everyone was having problems with the laso s14 pump. I wonder if a lot of it isnt just opinion?
