M3 starter install question

Recommended Posts

I am putting a new M3 starter in my tii. In looking at the archives, I understand the starter to be too short to attach to the existing bracket the old one attached to. Can I just leave the bracket completely off the engine? It also supports the throttle body as well. Does the throttle body need support? What have other tii owners done?

Secondly, there are three connections to my old starter, the large power source, a small black wire that was on the top terminal, and a larger tan colored (insulated) wire on the lower terminal. In other threads, I have seen only two connections. I believe the small black wire goes to the 50 terminal. Does anyone know where the other one goes?

Thanks.

BTW, highly recommend Blunt for purchases like this!!!

I don't know about the Tii and the throttle-body support, but I have been using the compact M3 starter on a regular 2002 without the bracket for about a year now, without any problem.

The tii uses the vertical support bracket to:

1) Secure the throttle body

2) Support the (long) factory type starter

3) Grounding point for the negative battery cable

4) Secures the fuel line return hose exiting the KF pump

With all the chatter and praise of the E30 M3 starter, I may do this upgrade in the future.
