It's a little hard to pass the sniff test when the numbers show that the engine pumps more air than the displacement can handle.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

 

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

It's scavenging!  Cam overlap!  Red paint and a tailwind!

 

We also underestimate how GOOD modern lubricants are.  I ran dino oil a couple of summers ago

in the PRO3 car, just because I had it and was going to race one weekend only.

Oil temps, usually in the  200- 210 when drafting got as high as 260 free- air.

I went back to the synthetics I usually use, and the temps went right back down, too.

 

I don't think I could run a 168 diff in the 2002 race car without a cooler if 

I didn't use low- vis synthetic.

 

So maybe 30bhp gets absorbed by a T18 in 3rd gear full of 140wt dead dinosaurs....

 

...but that's not how we do it any more.

Schrick and the factory may not use the same base assumptions with their cams.

Also, valve lift over 0.500" doesn't help much until you start to get waaaaay over Jim's redline.

So duration, area under the curve, etc, all matter more.

The engine builder was wrong... 208Nm - And I still have a couple of things to do and test
