My 72 tii has the black face instruments with no crosshairs.

If I had to guess, I would say that the mid-71(April 1971) models started using the black faces as oppossed to the ones with the chrome buttons in the center as was found on the early '02s. The crosshairs probably started with the 74 models and the woodgrain surround.

Well my July 72' 1602 (euro) has crosshairs, and April 71' 2002 has chrome ring. HTH Beaner7102

"modell 71" updates, introduced at approx 2570001. But BMW being BMW, they tended to use up what they had on hand, so some early 257xxxx cars may have the old style silver-center instruments. The "crosshairs" were brought in with the 74 squarelights, but again, I'll bet some early 74s ended up with '73 instruments until they ran out.

If you have a '72 with crosshairs, it's most likely a replacement instrument. Next time you have the cluster out, look at the date stamp on the back side of the particular instrument... betcha it's after August 73...
