Toyo Tires B-Sedan Race from Sonoma- Video

Recommended Posts

We had a great weekend down in Sonoma racing my Koepchen 2002 in the Toyo Tires 2.5 Challenge race. The Datsun 510s are still dominating but the Bavarian Brigade held its own. Love the new pavement!!

Here you go, @mac

Re: rules -> most would say they have 'evolved' - have a look here: SVRA B Sedan Challenge rules

The development of the 510s is impressive. The BMW I built and support - #002 on the sheet - moved up to the BS class in the middle of last year, and is getting a deliberate-yet-patient series of updates, with the goal of P1 (the driver accepts no other). I moved my own race car to BS as of the last race, but am still running a single 38/38. That's fun. -KB

For this race, everyone was on the same tires.

The progress of the 510s has been helped immensely by the work of Troy Ermish. He has spent many hours testing and refining the cars, and to his credit, he passes along what he learns to all the other 510 drivers.

Unfortunately those of us who race 2002s don't benefit from such a development program. We are left to do what we can when we can.

A few years ago Sam Smith was working with Carl Nelson on developing the red 2002 they raced and they made some progress with the car. In 2018 Sam was leading the national B Sedan race at COTA handily when he broke something. It would be helpful to get with them and see what they learned.

SVRA just posted their video coverage of the B Sedan race. Ben Cissell did a great job putting the video together using trackside and incar video. Lots of incar footage from Brian and Tony's 2002s.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
