Some Period Pics

I am told that Bovensiepen designed the Deko stripes himself.  They were changing at that time from BMW-Alpina to ALPINA.  He put them on a Gr2 CSL first and then shortly thereafter my 2002.  I believe they only raced it 1x with that livery although I have a pic or two of it in that paint with different numbers.

I am told the inspiration for the stripes was the Fischer C4 racing ski (I believe it), he must have been pals with someone at Fischer and allowed to use a strikingly similar graphic (just a guess).  Amazing that they still use them today almost 50 years later.

The 02 next to the CSL is the 'super' 02 with A4/s engine (supposedly making 190hp).

Schnitzer made its name at the races but also became really famous among 02ers in the mid 70s with its curvaceous extra wide flares.

Tony B once told me years ago that the original set he used as plugs for his reproduction Schnitzer flares had BBS logos bonded into the gel oat on their inside surfaces.

Note this Schnitzer car sports a late car nose and plastic grills with an early car 2E5B839D-35E2-45E0-9344-DC6CD173553E.jpeg.ab84aa9489f453817764b3b839f366c4.jpegwiper arm - maybe an updated older tub?

Very likely an updated older tub.  That is what they did with my car, updated rear tail with square lights >74 ditto for the front, plastic grilles.  I don't recall who it was now (someone) told me they wanted to have the cars look the most up-to-date they could - at least in the case of Alpina.  I believe the GS cars ran the plastic grilles as well, though I know they didn't update the rear panel.

More than a few have 'license plates', drive-em to the track, then drive home....you really only see it on like pre '70 cars...at least as I noticed.  I believe often they would drive to the race on a set of standard steelies and tires, with the race wheel/tires in the trunk, back seat etc., get to the race and swap things out.

I think these were called 'bat wings'. I've only ever seen them on early 1600s.  According to the big Alpina book, BB hated them and thus we got pig cheeks.

I still have a pair of those exact Fischer C4 racing skis. I purchased them new back in the day.

Pre-production 1500 - note white steering wheel, different steel wheels and wipers set for RHD (which is odd as they never made it to production and it's LHD, never worked that one out)

There is some BMW 507 in those wheels and steering wheel. I like the white wheel, a classy touch like in a 507or an early Porsche 356.

Early 1600-2 (msot likely a 1967), possibly a driver on weekdays and racer over the weekends, with period Cosmic alloys. These cars have the 6V electrical system. VDO made  an 6V tachometer for BMW as optional equipment for these cars, a rare item these days. Note the early style kidney grill , forward mounted swan neck mirror and polished aluminum interior mirror with slide in design.

That's exactly what my 1600Ti was. Original dealer raced it in rallyes and hill climbs in Canada for a couple of years. They put Webers on it and skinny 4.5" Cosmic Mk 1 alloys.

Here is a Bovensiepen team Alpina 2002ti race car interior layout. I think this image is from an old Auto Motor und Sport.

I think this might have been the interior of Mark’s factory Alpina race car before it’s facelift to square tail bodywork and ultimate development into its final Gr 2 specs.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
