Clock light stays on after engine is off

Hello,

 

can someone shed some idea on why my dash clock light stays on after engine is turned off?  It’s a 74 tii.  And should I pull the battery off so it won’t kill the battery?  I drive it about once a week.

I'm guessing that someone, after removing the clock, somehow managed to allow the wire that illuminates the clock to be in contact with (or was swapped with) the wire that powers the clock itself.  

 

The clock has to be "hot" all the time; otherwise it would never  show the correct time if its current was switched off whenever you turned off the ignition. 

 

The clock's light, on the other hand, is wired in with the lighting circuit, so it goes on and off with the parking, tail, headlights and dash lights.

Check the plug connection on the clock and the back of the dash.

You might have the grey wire for the light on the wrong terminal.

It could also be at the clock side.

Does any one have any pics on how the wiring should be connected on the clock side?

Here is a pic from E-Bay.  Unless the wires have been altered, it is hard to have it connected wrong.  Positive connector on the clock is male, ground on the clock is female and the bulb holder is directly connected to the wiring harness.

Another thing to check:  Twist the headlight switch to dim the instrument lights. Do all your lights dim?

If not, then check the grey wire to the clock light for voltage when the lights are off.
