Coupe swap - new 2000CA

Coupe swap - out with Chamonix and in with Polaris. VERY lucky to find an unfinished project in Paris (and don't ask what I paid unless you like to weep) and then even luckier to mention to a mate that I should sell my rusty project car, and he said he'd take it.

So just back from a 2700kms drive to Bretagne/Brittany to deliver the old Chamonix, onto Paris to pick up the new car and back down to the south of France.

On Friday morning I melted my transfer box near Claremont-Ferrand and with some amazing luck found a guy to install a spare he had on the shelf, on a Friday afternoon. Even more amazing was that the old Landrover still pulled the trailer for 80kms to the garage - the noise was horrendous ?

The new car was better than I could ever have imagined - it's mint, with just the gearbox to sort out and the interior to go back in. Everything else is new or refurbished. Never owned such a nice car!

Nice car, Nick!

I believe a transfer case is what we North American illiterates would call the differential?

No - it's the transfer box that sits behind the gearbox. It does house the central diff that splits the drive between the axles (hence the 'transfer') and it also houses the low and high range gearing.

The page I read on Google said, "The transfer case transfers power from the transmission to the front and rear axles."

I assumed that meant the differential but then I found the full explanation, which is the above quote plus, "via drive shafts."

Congratulations Nick! The 2000 CS is a fantastic car. I got one after driving BMW 2002s, and I love the CS. I was just a kid, sort of, in my early 20s and then driving the 2000 CS in Santa Barbara California, I felt like I was on top of the world!

It looks like you got an automatic, are you going to resist putting a TI motor and gearbox in it?

All the best, sincerely Peter

Hi Peter - yes, I'm a bit in love already. Had the Chamonix car for 6 years, but it never rose to the top of the project list and the older you get the shorter you realise life is. So this seemed like a brilliant opportunity to save money in the long run and more importantly start enjoying coupe ownership a lot sooner.

I can imagine how you felt driving yours in your twenties, so cool.

I'm keeping her stock for now - everything is in such great condition and I've never even driven let alone lived with a stock 2 litre auto. I reckon it will be just fine as is - I have my dream engine to drop in the NK and another stroker project for my touring, and at the end of the line all the running gear for another s14 engined car, so this will stay a lazy cruiser. If the modding itch takes hold then I reckon a 4hp auto and ti pistons with a 32/36 woud be the way to go.

Rear tyres are date stamped 1983 and with the excellent condition of the fragile blue cloth seats it has me wondering if the 38,000 on the clock might even be genuine. It's certainly not more than 138,000. Also just discovered it was made in August 1966 and probably sat in a Paris showroom until being sold and registered in March 67. Plus the surprise that it was originally bristol grey - somone spent a lot of money on the colour change as it's very well done.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
