Perhaps shallow, but it’s sometimes hard to tell. There was a lack of uniformity among side grilles (different manufacturers over time? different production methods over time?), and the difference isn’t always as obvious as in my example below: deep on top, shallow on the bottom.

I’m no expert but there’s definitely distinction. The deep grill opening is smaller as well.

Wow: you’re good!

75% of U.S. round taillight owners don’t realize there are deep and shallow side grilles, 15% of U.S. round taillight owners realize there are deep and shallow grilles, but have no idea what that means, 5% of U.S. round taillight owners realize there are deep and shallow grilles, mostly understand the distinction, but only get the identification right half the time, and 5% of U.S. round taillight owners realize there are deep and shallow grilles, understand the distinction, and get the identification right all the time!  ?

You have a solid source for these stats or are you pulling them out of somewhere deep? :)
