1968 only colors?

mo02

Recommended Posts

Can anyone please confirm 1968 only colors for 2002?  So far I have:

1) Schwarz (?)

2) Chamonix

3) Turf (1600?)

4) Florida (1600?)

5) Sahara

6) Bristol

7) Nevada

8) Manila

9) Pacific (1600?)

10) Caribe

11) Derby (1600?)

12) Granada

13) Polaris

Colors I am unsure about but seem correct:

1) Colorado

2) Fjord

3) Tampico

4) Riveria

I am certain this is not accurate but would love to add/subtract colors to make this list correct.

Thanks in advance to all,

Mo

Mo,

I don't know what your goal is here, and how much accuracy you need.  By saying "1968", are you referring to the 1968 calendar year?  Or to the 1968 model year, which itself may differ from market to market?

To further complicate matters, new colors were not necessarily added, and old colors were not necessarily eliminated, at dates that coincided with either calendar or model years.

Given that I don't have all the relevant color brochures, I can't solve all these issues, and provide every color available from the earliest 1968 model year through the end of the 1968 calendar year.  But I do have the November 1968 brochure, which, although intended to present the 1969 colors, gives some sense of the 1968 colors.  This is the global, all-models, factory brochure.

I believe Mike S. has a Hoffman Motors brochure/document showing U.S. 2002 color availability ca. 1969, and it, unsurprisingly, shows a considerably smaller selection of colors available through the Hoffman Motors network than the wide range available from the factory.

All the colors on the November 1968 global, all-models, factory brochure  were available on 1600-2's and 2002's except for (a.) Colorado, available solely on the just-introduced 2002ti, and (b.) Nachtblau metallic, available solely on the 2000CS, the 2000CA, and the 2800CS.

Colors listed in the November 1968 brochure are:

1.  Granada

2.  Florida

3.  Atlantic

4.  Chamonix

5.  Schwarz

6.  Sahara

7.  Colorado

8.  Nachtblau metallic

9.  Nevada

10.  Tundra metallic

11.  Bristol

12.  Baikal metallic

13.  Polaris metallic

Regards,

Steve

Mo,

Per James Taylor, BMW 2002:1968-76, p. 25, colors available for model year 1968 were Atlantik, Caribe, Chamonix, Colorado, Derby, Florida, Granada, Manila, Nevada, Pacific, Sahara, Tampico, Turf, and Polaris (metallic).

I claim no expertise here, merely relaying information from another published source.

Thanks for taking interest Matt, :)

I will try find the book....seems like a good place to look.  Their list seems complete & I wonder if these are North American only colors-- great lead.

Best,

If you're referring to the US market 2002s, model year 1968 and 1969, Hoffman Motors ordered cars only in five colors:  Nevada, Granada, Chaminox as standard--and Baikal and Polaris (both metallic) were extra cost options.

I have correspondence from Hoffman dated late 1968 confirming that--my letters and responses from Hoffman when I was buying my '69, because I wanted something other than the colors offered (I was unsuccessful, and ended up with a Nevada car.)

That being said...US spec cars that were not sold through Hoffman--overseas delivery to military, diplomatic etc--could be ordered in every color on your list.  Just about every US 68 or 69 2002 whose original color isn't one of the five above turned out to be non-Hoffman European delivery.

cheers

James Taylor's book turned out to be filled with errors, omissions, and mis-understandings.  I would assume nothing from his book is definitive -- it might be close, but probably not 100% accurate.

Thanks Mike,

I am really glad a resident expert (original owner) such as yourself can recall Hoffman original colors.  Great point about Euro delivery (military) orders.

Your knowledge is appreciated,

My 11/68 Hoffman 2002 is Manila, and many, many 2002s here in the US are also Manila.  I also think the same is true with Bristol, Riviera and Sahara.

Thanks Chris,

Seems like those would be popular early colors....each with great character.  BTW I just received my BMW CCCA newsletter & you are mentioned in 2 articles- well done.

Those other colors were probably available on 1600s. I know my Caribe was only a 1600 color.

Great point.  Both models where offered in 1968 so worth a detailed look.

Love the Caribe BTW-- a wonderful & rare early blue.

I just want to examine the issue of a “1600-only” color.  Does such a thing exist?  I have seen evidence of BMW limiting certain colors to certain, generally rarer, sub-models and models.

For instance, in 1964, Polaris metallic was only available on the 1800ti, not on the NK 1500, 1600, or 1800.  The first photo below is of a May 1964 NK-only color brochure, illustrating this.  From 1965 onward, Polaris was available on the full range of NK models.  Second, the 2002ti was introduced in September 1968 and, simultaneously, Colorado was introduced as a 2002ti-only color.  The second photo is of the November 1968 all-models color brochure, illustrating this.  From sometime in 1969 onward, Colorado was available for the full range of ‘02’s.  Third, and also illustrated by the second photo, Nachtblau metallic was, in 1968, only available on the coupes:  2000CA, 2000CS, and 2800CS.  Certainly by November 1968, the other colors were available for the full spectrum of models and sub-models.

But I’ve not seen BMW evidence of a 1600-only, or 1600-2-only color.  Certainly there is a time element to the relationship of colors to models.  Thus, for instance, the 2002 model is introduced to the public in early 1968 — probably no U.S. examples until April or May of 1968 — and Caribe is gone by the time of the November 1968 all-models color brochure.  So Caribe, for instance — a rare color certainly — is disappearing just as the 2002 is appearing.  But there are Caribe 2002’s out there.

For instance, forum member Z3M owns a documented Caribe 1968 2002.  From an earlier thread regarding his 1968, we have:

On 5/20/2015 at 12:50 PM, Z3M said:

I emailed BMW classic a while ago, and they said "The BMW 2002 US VIN 1662720 was manufactured on July 29th, 1968 and delivered on August 17th, 1968 to the company J.B.S. (a BMW Military sales contractor) in Frankfurt, Germany. The original colour was Caribe, paint code 059. In 1968 BMW produced 4,489 units of the BMW 2002 US."

You’ll note that, although VIN 1662720 is a U.S.-spec car, it is not a Hoffman Motors car.  It’s an example of a rare non-Hoffman car ordered and delivered through a number of contractors permitted to sell U.S.-spec cars to U.S. service members serving abroad.  Thus, colors were not limited by what Hoffman Motors wanted to order.

I've also seen a Caribe 1967(?) 1800 (4-door NK) with what really appeared to be largely original paint.

If you have any original literature or documents that illustrate 1600-only colors, I’m genuinely interested in seeing them, as I haven’t come across them thus far.  The more we know about the history, the better!

Regards,

Steve
