Carb to EFI Question

Hey there,

This might sound a little dumb to ask but I've got a question. So my 72 2002 came with an e21 m10 in it. In a box that I got it had an e21 intake with injectors, e21 water pump and e21 water hose. Right now it has a carburetor and runs nearly stock for a 2002 aside from distributor and fuel pump. Anyways, if I was interested in converting it back to EFI, how much labor, expense, and hassle am I looking at if i already have an intake and other things stated above? Will I get a noticeable difference in power? And if I decided to do it, what's the best route?

The answer depends a lot on whether you are doing it yourself Vs paying someone to do it. There are a number of potential routes you can go down and if you are paying for it, you want to find someone who's familiar with your chosen route. You don't want to be paying them to learn a new skill on your dime.

Lots to read on this board regarding Megasquirt and other aftermarket systems as well as where people have adapted later systems. There are pro's and con's to each approach so read up and get informed.

Short answer- no, you won't see an improvement with E21 parts.  Put them on eBay as 'rare, hard to find' and 'will survive an EMP', but I don't recommend putting them on YOUR car.  It's CIS, not EFI, and it is

a beast that is similar to, but different from, a hose nozzle.

 

The longer answer- do you like doing projects yourself?  Are you somewhat electronically unshy?  Do you finish what you dig into, even if that involves getting someone else to help you, even finish it for you?

Then EFI conversion might be for you.  Search for details- this has come up since the E30 318i came into being, and it's still a live topic here.  If it looks fun, try it- you can always just bolt the carb back on.

 

If the whole thing gives you the heebie- jeebies, give your carb a pat on the intake and treat yourself to a nice shiny set of wheels- they'll be cheaper, think of all the money you've just saved!
