Blue leather 73 2002 seats

Price:: 250

Location: : Eugene, OR

I have for sale a complete set of front and back seats for a 73 2002.  They have the 73 specific headrests, which are dished, not flat like the earlier ones. The leather on top of the rear seat back is cracked. You could either top it, or replace all the leather. All the blue panels are real leather, including headrests, map pouches and side panels. The seat frames and springs are in good shape. Horsehair is in fair to good condition. The seats could be used as-is or used as cores to restore a 73 specific 02. We have never seen an original set of 2002 leather seats. Chances are, these are stock vinyl units, recovered in blue leather at some point. We are not interested in shipping these. Local cash pickup, please.

Very cool! I'm still assuming they were recovered a long, long time ago, but they strictly followed the original pattern (12 pleats on each front seat and 36 pleats across the back seat) AND they appear to be covered in that thick leather that German manufacturers love -- or should I say "loved"?

Thanks, Steve. What do you think the chances are of these being original? You are correct about the thick leather. Our 3.0 S had the same look and feel to it's seats

I have not dismissed the possibility that they are original. There are metal fold-over tabs that secure portions of the coverings to the seat frames. Sometimes it is obvious that these tabs have been bent back and re-bent multiple times. Sometimes it is, at best, ambiguous!

Leather was available on special order, but, in practice, not through Hoffman, except possibly for a few European deliveries. Do you know anything about the car out of which these came? U.S.-spec? Dealer delivery?

There's a red leather original interior in a square taillight owned by a forum member. It's not inconceivable that more examples found their way to the U.S.

See the language in the attached, which is from one of the global, all-model paint and upholstery brochures. But again, Hoffman, and price, generally stood in the way!

GLWS,

Steve

Thanks again, Steve. I worked for BMW in 73 before BMW of North America was born. I asked my son if he remembered where I got the seats. He said he thought I had them for twenty years and they came as part of a package deal from CA.

 I bet a lot of us old folks wished that Max Hoffman wasn't so conservative on his color choices for 2002s sold in the USA. We might have seen some amazing color combos

I have not stopped thinking about these seats, always hoping I might envision a project out there that could justify their purchase.  Of course, the low likelihood of that project doesn't justify the cost, the storage, etc. But I do believe there is a 50% chance these could be factory leather seats.  There are upholstery shops -- they usually work on cars MUCH more expensive than '02's -- that could restore these seats beautifully, replacing only the torn panels but re-dying the entire seats such that the color would be uniform and the wear creases would be visually minimized (although not eliminated).

Regards,

Steve

Still available? let me know

Diondion, the original poster of this advertisement passed away from Cancer a few months ago. His name was David Lumbra and he owned a shop in Oregon for many years. We all mourn the passing of one of the old, good 2002 guys. :(
