Breaker Plate Points Screw Stripped

Guys know where I can get a replacement breaker plate for the Bosch distributor in my 1970 1600? One of the former owners must have over torqued the screw to set the points. Now the screw barely has any threads to bite on. Or can the plate be repaired? I am getting pretty good at setting the gap visually  ;)

Two suggestions:

 

1.  use a short, self-tapping screw that's slightly larger (preferably stainless steel if you can find one).  Not very elegant but it'll work.  Just use a star washer under the screw head and don't over-tighten.

 

2.  If you have any taps, re-tap the hole to the next larger size, either metric or SAE.

 

You used to be able to buy a complete point plate assembly (with points) from a Bosch dealer; I would presume they're still available as they do wear out.

Try you local self serve junk yard.  Look for any older German 4 cylinder car, remove the distibutor, and remove the breaker plate.  There is a good chance you'll find one with a similar breaker plate.

 

Or do what Mike suggests - just find a slightly bigger course thread sheet metal screw or remove yours and re-tap.

I have a complete breaker plate from a JUFR 4 that's yours for the postage.  I checked the points hold down screw and is ok. PM me.

Interesting that people feel that everything needs to be overtightened like they are wheel nuts.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

BTW I adjusted the points again and she is running like a top again, but I know its only a matter of time before I loose that air gap on the points.
