mosty BMW, but I do love my '61 Lincoln, even if I'll probably have

to sell it soon to pay for school. The only really terrible car on the

list was the alfa... it was my first car at 18, spent all my hard

earned money on it, and it lasted only 4 weeks before the tranny

blew up. The volvos were great; the wagon I bought for $600 as a

college car in New England (totally rusted out), but it lasted my

final two years of school and 20,000 miles while being driven 100

miles a night sometimes as a pizza delivery car. Pound for

pound, the best car I've ever owned.

I grew up with a british car junkie for a father so Jags, MG's and Triumphs were the cars I rebelled against in my youth, (so young, so naive) so I took the obscure car path:

1959 Rambler Custom (first car, seats folded down into a perfect queen size bed, perfect high school make out car, dont make 'em like that anymore. PO died so I just payed the mechanics storage fee for it: $300)

1974 VW Rabbit (practiced 4th to 1st shifting for fun at night with friends, car lasted a month...$250)

1970 Mercury Monterey two door 429ci (ugly beast but could lay 40ft patches, and was a pristine used lot find, $1800 marked down to "what's in your pocket?" by the salesman after seein me drooling on the showroom clean motor: $400)

1968 Dodge Dart GT (never buy a car in the rain at night in SF...didn't last long. $400)

1967 Crown Imperial Roadster (Knocked him down to $800 since the roof was literally cut off, then spent over $5000 rebuilding 440 motor and 727 torque flight tranny...first rebuild, first "real" car...still miss her today.)

Early Jeep Eagle (Never caught the year since it didn't last the road trip back from the docks in Seattle, drunken fisherman purchase...don't remember what I payed, probably a round of drinks.)

1982 Chevy Chevette ($700. We'll never speak of those practical student days again...holds a shit load of lumber for scenic artistry though, I'll give it that...)

1970 2002 with a pile of reciepts that, when all tallied, could buy another ten fleets of the junkers I've owned in the past...wouldn't trade her in a million years.

...But...over the years I've found myself getting the british itch...funny how we come full circle.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
