Luigi Csl Resto Update

Jim has the car back on its feet and running. He said he could have driven it up and down the street yesterday if it had not been raining. Just a few last details to button up, then off to Sonoma on Wednesday.

The car is stunning.  Gold star (x2) for getting it done in what would have to be record time.  Starting with a new company on Thursday so no way for me to take the day off (my 2nd day) - sh*tty planning on my part.  Depending on what is going on I may try to beat it up there Saturday for a few hours.  If not, then maybe Monterey in August.  Awesome job!

It has been just over 90 days since we collected Luigi at SEATAC and brought him back to Racecraft. Jim has him snorting and breathing fire again. What sweet music:

Thanks BMerry and nbcbird. I was trying not to jump on M motorsport too hard because he is a newbie. Here are 2 shots of my car at the RAC Tourist Trophy race in 1976. The Roundel on the 'C' pillar is clearly visible:

Here's a closeup of the hood, and it almost looks to me that the Roundel is a decal. Notice how flat it is. We decided to depart from history at this point by putting a real Roundel on the car.

I'm guessing that the Roundel on the hood took quite a beating and it was easier and cheaper to just put on a new decal after every race:

M motorsport,

All the street CSL's had the chrome rings around the Roundels, but not all the race cars.

Weight savings? Too much fuss and bother? Deemed unnecessary for racing? Not sure why they were left off.

If I were a betting man I'd guess that the motorsports shells (best guess is there were 140 of them made by BMW) did not have had the mounting holes stamped in them for the chrome rings, so those cars just glued the Roundel in the depression on the 'c' pillar and left the chrome rings off.

Every in-period photo I have seen of my car shows no chrome rings, so we left them off. In fact, non of the 3 Luigi cars had them that I can find.
