E30 engine meaning M42 or M20? If it's an m20 it's more chop up parts of your front end and trans tunnel to fit. It's all documented if you search

The E30 also came with the 4-cyl M10 (original 318i), but was fuel-injected.

You bet, lots of options for engine swaps. Most just bolt right in--after varying degrees of fabrication, modification and application of currency, of course. I could suggest a search, but that's already been said. Here's one I have not seen in a 2002, but enterprising folks have made it work in automotive applications. It is the Ford GAA, a big-block V8 that is reputedly somewhat of a torque monster at 18 liters. A bit heavy for the 2002 at 900+ lbs, but where there is a will there is a way! Best of luck with the project.
