Here's a pic of a set in an 02 I know of in Sacramento. I worked at the shop that services the car and have worked on it while there. I believe they are pre "bent" for camber and definitely are reinforced at the base where the spindle meets the tube. How much camber I don't remember. They were the hot shit way back in the day before coil overs. I don't know if I can get any more info than that on them. I'd set one next to a standard strut housing and compare the camber.

If somebody is building a period hot rod '02 with a close ratio trans, quick ratio steering box, Scheel seats, 45 DCOEs, a 300 cam, etc. these would be the shiznit... But so few know and understand what they are.

Thanks Tom. Those are the types of details we're interested in. Any idea how firm the dampening might be in comparison to a conventional Sachs strut? Am I correct in assuming they're somewhat stiffer?

very rare parts.  Still bummed I didn't get the set i was trying to buy about 15 years ago.  Anything that states "Made in Western Germany" pretty much dates itself.  My recollection is that they are something close to a bilstein "red dot" setting which I believe is 220/180.  This was their "Rallye Strut" one would assume made for "rallyeing", gussets the bottom of the strut, one of the most unique features is that the spindle is hardened (note the black color).  My recollection is that they had -1.5 or -2 deg negative camber.  Can't recall now whether they had lowered spring perches or not.  Very cool HP bmw 02 bit.

Oh, you probably figured this but camber built into strut housings means less tire clearance...

I 'm the lucky guy that has these and I am going to put them on a performance street car.

Any suggestion on what shocks to use in the rear to complement these in the front?

Skip told me maybe bilstein hd or sport or koni or some performance sachs.

What do you suggest?

Thanks

Tim

You could use any of those you mentioned.  Probably hard pressed to find a matching pair (used or new) of Sachs rear.  Just depends on what you favor as far as firmness for the rear.  Might help to know what the settings are for the fronts.  I have two sets of the upside down rear Billy's (not for sale though) and those would work well since they are very similar to what Sachs offered ..... but then like I said any of the standard rear bilsteins, or Koni's would as well.

Thanks Mark. I used to have a set of inverted Bilsteins myself. Came on a parts car I purchased and were obviously quite old but still looked and functioned perfectly. Marshall, I think Tim scored the struts in an Ebay auction a good many years ago. I'm not sure what he paid for them but I'd bet it was a great deal less than one of us might gladly pay for them today. When he showed them to me I realized I'd heard them mentioned in the forum before. That was quite some time ago, however. Thanks again guys for sharing your knowledge about them.

They are for sure...."federteller verstellbar renneinstellung" .... = "adjustable spring plate racing setting".  The "yellow dot" on the ones posted here must be (likely) sport setting or some other such.  The Ireland ones indicate the "blue dot" to be a race setting.  Interesting that bilstein didn't (at least as far as I know) utilize the hardened spindles.  I'll have to snap some photo's of my AlpinA CSL struts that are on my Grp. 2 car at some point.  You don't even want to know the valving on those.....scary.

I have a set of these on my car. They are the coil over version posted above. All i know is that they guy who built the car in the early 90's put these on. The only thing i need now is the close ratio steering box and ill be in good shape.
