I had a BMW shop in Marin County in the '70s and among my customers were dozens of band and/or family members from the Dead, Starship, Jesse Colin Young, etc. And an endless slew of successful purveyors of coffee and rare spices, headshop owners and other "cool" folk.

The hot deal was to cash a royalty check and go pick up a new 2002 or CS from Bernard at the old BMW of Marin and bring it over for tweaking; usually springs, bars and wheels were first, followed by a Nardi and a custom stereo. If they were serious, we'd do pistons and Webers, a Stahl and Ansa, a 5 speed and a quick steering box. No flares, no pig cheeks, no 3-piece BBS.
