Anthracite 02 Project

2002haus

Recommended Posts

Anthracite 76 ’02. This one is an original CA car that was purchased

from a fellow enthusiast and faq ’er (Thanks Dave K!).

His 73 Tii is here for a cosmetic and mechanical refurb.

This is a solid body and foundation to build up from.

It was painted a different color and is

now back to its original Anthracite shade of cool 70’s color.

Here is a demonstration of how to prepare and paint a 2002 correctly.

There are a few of qualified amateur restorers out there, although when it comes to the most important and expensive part of a restoration it should be left to the professional.

Our paint guy has about 35 years in the business and his work speaks for itself. His favorite color to spray is black. Picture perfect Porsche 356 bodies (the only flat panel on a 356 is the glove box lid).

So true (very true). Sometimes we (me anyway) takes the position of not paying someone to do my hobby. With regard to paint and bodywork, Rob you are right on, that is assuming you are desiring a high level of finish to your o2. I had a similar conversation just recently with the guy that is going to do my car....his comment was, your time is valuable, I do this and my guys do it all day long. No offense, but I can do it faster and at a substantially higher level of quality than you can.....No offense taken of course. As long as someone is mechanically inclined, stripping the car down and then doing some of the pre-paint prep work is about it. Not sure how much it costs to have someone soda blast a chassis, but again if you do the math (what your time is worth, how much time it is going to take) then you are probably ahead again having someone else do this.

Rob - what is the relay for in the LF headlight area? Or is that a voltage regulator?

Jim

I was wondering the same thing. Looks kind of like the relay for the A/C in my 74, but in that it's mounted on the passenger fender...

Hmm.

Jim,

That was the a/c relay before it was removed and deleted.

The a/c and radio were (US) dealer installed so it was

sometimes a crap shoot where and how parts were installed.

  • 3 months later...

I'd like a schwartz '02 one day.

And my gaps are terrible. But I blame the aftermarket hood and decklid mostly. Ah well.

Cheers,

Ray

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P

Rob -any updates on this project? I think a nice set of Alpina wheels would look great on it. Love the color.

Jim,

Thanks for checking in. The car is at its new home in the PNW.

It is being assembled by the current owner.

Hope to see it one of these days on the road.

Great color, and the kind of prep I would expect from something with your name on it Rob. You are so right, if your painter likes to paint black, he is good

Looking fwd to updates.

Kris,

The color was phenomenal in person. Appreciate the kind words.

Your Tii is now one of the best ones out there - the attention to detail

is top notch. Your new project is super sweet as well.

There are a few Tii projects here at the shop that are equal or better.

If the owners consent I may post some of those as blogs.

Looking forward to your updates Kris!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
