Spark plug wires melting

Recommended Posts

my spark plug wires on 3 & 2 are melting on the exhaust gasket heat shield..

I have two metal clips on the cylinder head cover that hold two wires each but

not tight enough...

I seem to remember seeing somewhere a device to hold each wire separately

but can't find it at either Jaymic/Mobile/WuA/Ireland/Bavarian...

any ideas?...

thanks...

jam a small piece of wood (popsicle stick) between the cables in the metal sleeve to hold 'em tightly in place.

There's supposed to be a plastic/rubber sleeve that fits over the cables and inside the metal sleeve; I suspect a piece cut from an old bicycle inner tube will do the trick and look prettier than the popsicle stick!

first off your wires are melting on the heat shield ?

like the 320i gasket with heat shield??

or the old metal shield on the ex. manifold ???

wires should not be drooping low enough to touch the old

metal shield , and if you had the later 320i gasket w/shield-

that would protect the wires - unless really poor quality wires?

install the 320i plug wire holding tube with ring supports

held by the cover nuts = no more drooping melted wires

this is why i like the e30 m10 exh gasket with heat shield. i always try to sell this with any head gasket set, or if someone is removing the exh manifold. #2

if you have the late style guides, and are buying a head set, just get the 318i set, and you will have almost everything you need, plus this gasket. the only other gaskets that are not in the 318 head set is the carb base gasket and the fuel pump gasket
