Car runs great but horrible gas mileage

Recommended Posts

1974 2002 with rebuilt engine with only 3,500 on the clock, a weber, new tires. car runs and sounds great. i'm getting between 15-17 mpg. what gives? i'm thinking about cleaning the air filter (are k&n just as good as weber filter), and replacing the plugs. Could a dirty filter kill that much mileage alone? I'm confused cus the car runs great.

........what are your driving habits? + .......

and what you may think is a 'great running' car,

may infact be a grossly over-rich jetted carb.

got any idea of the jetting numbers presently inside?

Idle Jets =

Primary Main Jet =

Primary Air Correct Jet =

Secondary Main Jet =

Secondary Air Correction Jet =

Float Level mm =

even ignition timing has an effect on yer gas mileage

you aren't calculating your mileage with a groggy trip meter are you?

You should be betting at least 26 mpg I would think.

CD's all-over it - You should get your carb specs understood.

How about a video clip of your motor running? And pics of your motor?

...yup , 2002 or tii should get a nominal 25 mpg min.

during a 200 mile high drive - sustained 60 ...75 mph.

take it from there......

loaded road trip up to Waterville Valley, NH. way back when=

Worse than my 18-21... 21 is my highway right now. I need to check my carb numbers.

i'm getting 15-17 local traffic in LA. I took a look at the air filter and it didn't look too bad. I then backed off the idle speed screw and adjusted the idle mixture screw. I think the idle screw was opening the throttle a hair too much and maybe the carbs were a little rich. Performance-wise the car seems to ride a bit smoother with a little more power. Not that I thought it was so was bad before but I feel an improvement. After this tank of gas if I don't see an improvement I'll take it to a shop to get the weber calibrated. Has anyone in LA used top-end performance in north hollywood for repairs?

If u r going to use top end for just tuning I think they r alright. But don't trust them with anyhng else. Had bad experiences. If u want it done right check out the sponser page at socal vintage BMW. That's a good local list of. Mechanics who respect and love our cars.
