    Is the plastic spacer on the tank sender outlet? Fuel clamps all tight?

    Right, six brake and one clutch hose.

    If there's any chance those hoses are original, it is false economy to not change them now. Rockauto has them.

    Might as well replace all five hoses. But it could be caliper operation too. How old are components?

    Did we determine if the front pulley had a timing pin nearby? If so, mark 33 degree on pulley and have it it.

    Good luck getting that thing machined perfectly square. Been there, threw it out. When tightening those bolts, put the main cover on loose and push down hard on it. I'd get s thick top gasket and goop it first.

    It may be hard to hear pinging in some cars. Anyway, its a BMW, not a Pinto.
