  1. When you go for the refit, and respray Give a call and visit Everything Euro in Winston, Tom does quality work at good prices.
  2. Unfortunately they are not all mine, but if you ever make it out this way a visit could be arranged (perhaps even some spirited driving). They, like 02s like to be driven, but only in good weather. There will be another joining these in April, an 80 rag top from WA.
  3. They can be tough to find as people tend to horde the good ones. A GTI would most likely be easier to get trim and body parts for as so many more were produced, but as far as mechanical bits they are nearly identical. Most Scirocco specific parts are NLA. I'm still amazed at how many 02 parts are still available new, you will never get that kind of support from VW.
  4. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4661283 Take a look at this link most are CA cars legally registered, and A1 chassis cars. Most VW 4 cylinder engines fit right in a MK1 GTI, some more obvious than others. As long as all smog stuff is moved as well I believe you are OK, But you could always post up any questions for CA folks here http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=13 they are always eager to help, just mention Scirocco somewhere in the post to keep (Paul) the moderator happy, I linked to that forum because the MK1 forum isn't always as helpful.
  5. Like I said it has to do with the support group as well as the car. Hear is a picture from an annual gathering (not my picture). Call me a pusher but these cars need saved as well.
  6. Missed one, a Scrirocco 16v, either MK1 or MK2. I do like the MK1 GTi idea though, but the Scirocco support group online is incredible just like here.
  7. In the past I have sprayed with penetrating oil, a couple of sharp taps with a hammer, apply heat, more oil, then a deep socket or flare wrench. I have yet to not get one loose this way, in fact I follow those steps every time even if they look clean. It would be a major pain if one broke off.
  8. I have been running their snow tires for years on other cars, they are outstanding, sturdy sidewalls and good tread life. I have been thinking of trying their other tires, as I would think they would be of similar quality.
  9. Hopefully they will make a Scirocco that looks like a Scirocco, not a Golf sport wagon.
  10. Actually I'm on the rebound, I went through the depression of finding rust in unexpected places, now I am finding others to be in much better shape than I thought. As I progress there will surely be more surprises, but looking at what others have gone through really helps.
  11. Thanks for that link. Mine overall is not as big of a project as that, but not that far off. The nose on mine is actually in good shape, as are the front fenders and frame rails (surprised the heck out of me). As far as the patch to the firewall, that is exactly what I had in mind, except I will have to go a little lower.
  12. The firewall should be an easy fix, but the piece I removed I'd rather just replace if possible. I have fixed so many of those small spots, and they always seem to be more of a pain than the larger areas. I guess I don't have the patience to let them cool long enough between tacks to prevent warping, and wind up having to hammer everything flat again.
  13. Looking to replace the rain tray in my 73, as it has some issues (fixable but I'd rather not). I removed it out of necessity to fix this. It is not devoid of rust either. It is still in the part diagrams but no part # listed.
  14. VW 16v 1.8L PL. Hopefully going in a Scirocco.
  15. I just started sorting mine out a couple of months ago, it had been sitting since 89. I replaced all hoses in the engine bay as well as at the fuel tank, flushed the fuel tank, and she started and idled beautifully. As was previously stated your brakes will most likely be frozen, mine will actually need new calipers and lines. I also put a little Marvel oil into each cylinder and on cam, rockers, etc, and let it sit for a couple of days, turned it over by hand a few times before first start. Oil change of course. After I ran it up to temp a couple of times I changed the oil again (not sure what gunk was sitting in the far corners of the engine), then did a compression test to see if the engine was still viable.
  16. I'm using 16 gauge for the patches its easy to weld, put a piece of copper bus bar behind the weld and no worrying about blow through. It does however take a bit more time to coax into more complex shapes. So far I have found pictures of that section done 3 different ways, one on the assembly line, but I can't see it well enough to reproduce it.
  17. I remember seeing reference to that article while searching, I'll look into it. I don't have a problem making the patch panel, but without something to match I am not convinced that I have it looking right.
  18. where the floor meets the firewall there appeared to be a bracket welded to the floor supporting a protruding piece of the firewall on the bottom of the car. I am trying to fabricate a replacement section, but the drivers side is all but gone and there is very little left on the pass side. Any chance someone has detailed pics of that area, or better yet a good line drawing? The good news is that my welding/fabricating skills are improving quickly with this car. Before you ask I have opened inspection holes in both the rockers and frame rails, and they are solid and nearly rust free on the inside. Thanks.
  19. You mean the Michelin XAS tires from 1980 on mine are no good anymore, they have full tread left. Don't worry I never intended to drive on them. I've always been told to check tire date codes.
  20. At least we can still get the parts, try buying trim, panels, etc. for a VW Scirocco (almost all NLA). When I got my 02 I was amazed at the fact that you can still get most parts from the dealer, I'm used to being asked what is a Scirocco at the VW dealership.
  21. I am up in Loveland, but my 2002 won't be roadworthy until sometime next year. 20+ years of storage to recover from (go-yes, stop-not so much, suspension mounts crunchy).
  22. After much use of the search function, and replacing all hoses, fuel, clamps, bushings, and all other rubber parts, my 73 fired right up. She had been in storage for 20+ years, and idled perfectly right away.I did a compression test as well 118-120 on all 4 cylinders, engine cold. Pleasantly consistent, the gauge isn't calibrated so I don't know if the psi is correct but consistency on a 74,000 mile engine (original) is OK in my book. Next step is going to be brakes, the front calipers keep sticking, and I don't trust any of the lines, even some of the hard lines. Anyone know what type of flare BMW used, where I might find the flaring tool, and a good source for the hard line (stainless?) and fittings? http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,325153/highlight,/
