  1. I'm considering selling my 1971.5 2002, as I'm not in a position to maintain multiple cars in my life. Pictures of the car are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mkbazeley/sets/72157605979196395/. I'll add more soon. The particulars: - I've owned the car since May 2008. - New 32/36 Weber carb, manual choke - Electronic ignition - Rebuilt top-end with stock cam - Uncommon high-compression 10:1 pistons - Serviced by H&B and Bavarian Professionals in Berkeley - Tii exhaust - Otherwise stock motor - Rust in the rockers, spare tire well, trunk lid (under chrome strip) and surface rust elsewhere - Nice interior with Recaro seats. One rip in driver's seat, none on passenger's side or rear seat. Newish carpet. Couple of cracks on dash - Aftermarket electric sunroof. - 4-speed - Original manual and documents, service records spanning many years - Will include uninstalled, good quality 5-speed gearbox and 3.91 rear end. Buyer would need shortened driveshaft, shifter linkages, etc. - Recently rehabbed front-end, with new bushings, control arms, struts, etc. - Chrome bumpers are in decent/good condition. - Northern California car from day one, purchased in SF, owned in Petaluma, then Santa Rosa and now Oakland. - Will include spare trunk lid and never-used right fender. - Will include new, never-installed Euro turn signals - The motor is not original, thus the numbers do not match with the body. All I know about the motor is that it was purchased from somewhere in the Midwest, date unknown, but probably in the 90s. - Upgraded door brakes - Comes with two car covers, a nylon one from BavPro and soft cotton one. - Includes various other parts, extra tires, chrome hub caps This has been a sturdy, reliable little car. It has two cosmetic issues. 1) The left-front fender was recently replaced because the original was damaged when the front-end collapsed. So it needs to be painted to match the rest of the car. I already have matching paint for that. 2) Someone backed into the nose, causing a dent (pics to come). The damage is not significant. I believe it could be repaired by a body shop. You'll need a new center grill, though. I'm open offers. I'll start the discussion at $4,200 and go from there. Contact me through the board. I'm located in Oakland, CA Thanks for looking. Cheers. Michael[/b]
  2. When I had this problem, it was a slightly bent tube. It doesn't take much to make the strut not fit all the way. I'd try to exchange it.
  3. Just FYI, the reason the smell is worse when you open the windows is because you are creating a vacuum that sucks in air from where the fuel smell is, probably the trunk. I have the same problem. So far, changing the seal on the fuel sending unit did not help. But it's a quick and cheap fix that might work. You can get the part at any dealer for a few bucks. Your gas tank might also have a leak around its seam. Good luck.
  4. I've been watching that car on Craigslist for a while. If I recall, he was asking a reasonable price for it. Good for you. Good luck. Michael
  5. He's been told. Twice. I think he just doesn't realize the supply/demand issue with these wheels.
  6. I had a new cam put in and some other little work as needed. It cost about $1,500 all in, including the cost of the cam, gaskets, etc., timing the motor, etc. It's impossible to compare with your situation, though, because there was labor for pulling and reinstalling the head. I would just call Allen Hardy, the owner, and ask him what, if anything, he can do for you. Michael
  7. I just had head work done at H&B in Berkeley (of Hardy and Beck fame), and was very pleased. They are a whole car BMW shop, not a machine shop. But they have their own in-house machine shop. Michael
  8. I heard back from Andreas on this. He answer tracks with what others have said: "The production date is usually the date when the car left the assembly line. The delivery date is - and this is what you call an educated guess - is most likely the date when it left the factory storage and went on it's way to the dealer, not the date when it got there."
  9. I finally got around to having Andreas run my VIN. Here's what came back: "The BMW 2002 US VIN 2573691 was manufactured on May 12th, 1971 and delivered on May 13th, 1971 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City." Question: How could the car be manufactured in Germany one day and be in New York City the next? Is "delivered" the date it left Germany? Michael
  10. Thanks for the replies, folks. I have two email addys, so hopefully I'm covered. Michael
  11. That would the Fernando who owns this lovely car: http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,316215/ I have a question for him. Thanks, Michael
  12. These are the wheels that came on Tii's. They take the full chrome wheel covers. I am not interested in the later model ones that use the center caps. Thanks. Michael
  13. Yes, I've learned a lot about bank transfers in the past several days. Armed with all the info you noted, I'm still having problems and don't know why. Maybe what I am missing in this equation is the "competent bank official.''
  14. Hi folks, I recently purchased something for my 2002 on eBay Germany. The seller's method of payment is bank transfer (common in Europe). Unfortunately, my U.S. bank cannot seem to find the seller's German bank in its system (it appears not to be a major German bank). So I can't transfer the money. Would anyone in Europe be willing to check to see if their bank can talk to the seller's bank? I'd wire you the money and you could wire it to the seller. I suspect the problem may be that his bank has trouble accepting U.S. transfers. I have no idea how burdensome this would be on your end. So I understand if no one wants to jump on this. But if you are willing, please email me through the email button above. Thanks much. Michael

  16. Not the later model 5'' steelies, but the earlier ones that can take the full chrome wheel covers. Thanks much. Michael
  17. I do still need one. Can you email me through the board. Thanks.
  18. Hi Fernando, if you are checking this thread, can you tell me whether those are 5'' wheels and if so where you got them? Also, what size tire are you running? Thanks, Michael
  19. It's the wheel cover on the right in the image below. I just need one in good condition. Thanks.
  20. Several threads on this. Search the forum for both "Schank" (that's painter Andy Schank. And also for "Miracle" and "paint.'' Apparently, the Miracle Auto Paint in Richmond is supposed to be good.
  21. Hi Michele, I'm no Jedi, but if no one smarter than me chimes in the next day or so, I may be able to at least get you running again. Email me via the board. Cheers, Michael
  22. Try these guys: http://www.bavengine.com/engine.html
  23. I would be interested in this. I believe World Upholstery does not offer tan for older 02s, so this would be very welcome. Michael
  24. I'd go with electric also, as CD says. My '71 has a new 32/36 with a manual choke, while my '74 has an electric choke. The '74 warms up much easier and just generally gets going better (though there are doubtless other factors involved, too). Also, when my mechanic installed the 32/36, he had to fabricate a cable that was long enough and that allowed me to keep my original choke knob. It was a pain.
