  1. Well, it was there a few days ago anyway. In a 1983 320i against the back fence (across from the green, picked over 2002). It's NOT a limited slip. And the odometer on the car has 300k+ miles on it. I tried my noble best to get it out with the tools I had on hand, but it wasn't to be. They charge $85 for differentials there. I never really looked at the 5-speed since I have one already.
  2. You can buy control arms with the bushings already installed at BavAuto and elsewhere for about $100 or less. Saves a lot of work. The urethane bushings are easy to install, but will provide a stiffer suspension. So take that into consideration. There are several threads on the board about this.
  3. Left side for a '71. Though I don't think there's much difference year-to-year. Email me via the link next to my name. Thanks. GOT WHAT I NEEDED. THANKS ALL.
  4. Just to close to the loop on this, it's apparent now that the bolts at the base of the strut housing sheared off, probably due to age and rust (and the jolt of the bump I hit). One bolt is gone completely, the other two are sheared off and remain in the strut housing. I don't see how a mechanic or anyone else could have foreseen this based on the visual evidence. It's not apparent looking at the bolt heads how decayed they are inside. So the lesson I'm taking away from this is that when you buy a vintage car, it's worthwhile to take the time to replace all the critical bolts, nuts, etc. that could lead to catastrophic failure if they fail. If parts like this look original on a 35-year-old car, replace them. It's a small price to pay for peace of mind.
  5. Hi, can you email me via the link above so we can talk particulars. Thanks a lot. Michael
  6. Good condition. Would be best if you're in the Bay Area. Thanks.
  7. Hi, do you still have these fenders in the Bay Area?
  8. ...it look like this. Was driving down the road, hit a moderate bump, accompanied by a loud bang from the front. While I contemplated what to do, I was forced to brake for slower traffic. Front wheel stopped, car body kept going. I don't know what caused this, but the ball joint bolts are long gone and the thing is split from the strut. I haven't had a chance to get under it yet to see the extent of the damage. The strut mount area in the engine compartment only has a slight, slight dimple. My biggest fear is that the steering box on up was bent out out of shape. But I think this all may be fixable without too much pain. But the fender, how do you replace those? They look welded to the front piece. More gruesome pics here: http://picasaweb.google.com/mbazeley/2002Wrecked?pli=1&gsessionid=kyTYcN-nNdFDeigm2U-9jQ# Oh, and good luck getting AAA to tow you if this ever happens. They were at a loss.
  9. He's come down $500 on the the price. But the rust is not insignificant on this car. Be sure to ask the owner to send you detailed pics of the rust areas. There's work involved.
  10. In the pic below, I've got two hoses coming out of the firewall side-by-side. The top one's the fuel line. Is the other one the fuel tank vent hose that used to go into a charcoal cannister? If so, shouldn't it be UN-plugged, not plugged with a bolt as it is now?
  11. Thanks all, per usual. What's weird is I've seen reference on this board amd elsewhere to different versions of Boges, besides OE, including Pro gas and Turbo gas models. Can't seem to find those for sale. Everyone just has the stock OEs. Urgh.
  12. I know this is mostly a Bilstein crowd, but if one wanted to break with the pack and go with Boge for struts and shocks, where would one find them? My Google searches have turned up scant online ordering possibilities for 2002s. VWs and Audis, yes. 2002s, no.
  13. Mine just started doing the same thing. I'm assuming there is a loose ground somewhere coming out of the instrument cluster. Might also explain why my temp gauge flicks up and down when the blinkers are on.
  14. What he's saying is to create a vanity plate with a normal letter/number combo that fits that era. That would probably look weird, though, because the letter/number sizes are smaller than they were pre-1970. You'd have a huge gap in the middle. But again, I say what's the point? If you don't have a car that warrants a black and yellow plate, then suck it up and move on. Why be a fraud? I just cleaned and polished my blue and yellow plate last night, and it looks fairly great.
  15. My bad. I didn't notice that was a blue coil. No ballast needed.
  16. Legal issues aside, what pleasure do you get knowing that you're driving around with fraudulent black plates? It kind of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?
  17. Yeah, the DMV and the CHP want people using the white plates whenever possible because they are reflective and easier for officers to see the numbers/letters when they're behind you. Deliberately altering that would probably get you in big trouble: And...
  18. Is that what that is? My '74 came with one of those rotors, and I always wondered why it was different. What's the point of it?
  19. Yes, you're timing is off. Same thing happened to me. Get the car running by cranking up the idle screw so it will stay idling, then loosen the distributor nut and gently turn the distributor until you get a decently smooth idle. Then, at normal running temperature, do a more fine-grained timing with a timing light at the correct idle speed, etc. Oh, and by all means, put that resistor back on, and make sure the wiring is as illustrated in the Pertronix instructions.
  20. Regarding Bob's question of where are all the old plates: Black and yellows were for cars '69 and before (not 1975, as noted above). That's a small subset of 2002s. Of those, I'm sure many got trashed or rusted over the years, or maybe people lost the front plate and needed a new set. Or the car went non-op for a while and was issued new plates when it was reregistered. I still see quite a few blue and yellows, including on both my 2002s.
  21. There was a bill, last year I think, that would have allowed cars from 1969 and back to replate with new black and yellow plates. Historic car owners were pushing for it, arguing that their cars couldn't be truly restored unless they had year-of-make plates on them. But it failed in the state Assembly. In the meantime, you can get fake black and yellow plates here: http://www.licenseplates.tv/cat/california_147.html. Although why you would do that is beyond me. BTW, my guess is that if the car referenced in the original post was not continuously registered over the years, the DMW will replace the black and yellows with new plates.
  22. Adjusted profile so you can email me. Michael
  23. I have a 4 into 2 header that I just took of my '71 Sahara. Or are you set on going with the stock manifold? I'm in Oakland, btw.
  24. What are those wheels on the middle yellow car called? I've always liked those, and they look especially good on certain 2002s.
  25. http://www.2002haus.com/EngineRebuilds.htm http://www.racetep.com/bmwngin.html And there may be independent BMW repair shops nearby that will do the same.
